Thomas Newland Obituary

Thomas David Newland

Thomas David Newland, beloved husband, son, brother, and uncle, passed away peacefully on May 15, 2010 with his loving family by his side. He lost a short battle with the hereditary disease, hemochromatoisis. Tom was born in Everett, WA on September 4, 1968 to George and Maribeth Newland, the third of four brothers.
The love of his life, Catherine Gilbert Newland, will forever treasure him in her heart. He will be greatly missed by family, George and Maribeth Newland of Everett, Si and Lisa and their sons, Geo and Spencer Newland of Everett, Sam and Karen and their daughters, Samantha and Alayna Newland of Everett, Matt and Barbara and their children, Jane, Owen and Sally Newland of Seattle, Michael and Stephanie and their children, Josiah, Olivia and Noah Juarez, of Everett and Curt and Kelly Gilbert of Baltimore MD.
Tom was raised in Everett and attended Jackson Elementary, North Middle School and graduated from Everett High School in 1986. At Everett High, Tom participated in football and track and was a three-year letterman in both sports. He excelled in the classroom as well and was a veracious reader. He was an accredited skier and taught hundreds of kids to ski as an instructor for the Jean Lyons Ski School at Stevens Pass.
Tom went on to graduate from the University of Colorado at Boulder with degrees in Political Science and Military History. He also played football, lacrosse and was on the fencing team at CU. After college he fulfilled his dream to circle the globe on a six month adventure that included stops in Korea, Thailand, Australia, England, France and Scotland among many others. Upon his return he became engaged to Catherine, his wife of 13 years. Together they built a great life with homes in Everett and Mission Beach. Their love of boating, fishing and the great outdoors allowed them many wonderful adventures along with their dog Yukon. Tom was an avid grill master and marksman. Hunting up north and boating on the Columbia River with friends was something he always looked forward to as well as fishing on Langara Island in British Columbia with his Dad and brothers.
Tom's career followed the family business of commercial construction that eventually led to the niche field of high-rise construction safety. Tom formed his own company, Newland Safety Services which provided consulting services to many general contractors in the greater Puget Sound Region. Tom was particularly proud of two projects in Seattle, the Cristalla Building in Belltown and Hotel 1000 on First Avenue. Tom was a fun loving, ambitious, hard working and competitive individual who loved life on a grand scale.
Catherine and the family wish to thank The Everett Clinic, Drs. Finley, Gunderson, Palmer and Pascual and their medical staff, the University of Washington Medical Center, the nurses, Joelle, Linda, Jenni and Olympia of Providence Regional Medical Center, Everett, for their excellent care and compassionate understanding.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Friday, May 21, 2010 at the First Presbyterian Church of Everett.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Boys and Girls Clubs of Snohomish County.

Dear Newland Family

It was with great sadness to hear of Tom's passing and we extend our condolances to your entire family. I don't need to tell you because you already know that knowing Tom was a pleasure. While I did not know Tom outside of work I can tell you that Tom was a person of values and integrity and was never going to let anyone out-work him. Tom was true asset to our company and it was moving to hear how he valued working on our projects in Seattle. Seven (7) of us attended Tom's memorial service last Friday and ejoyed reflecting on Tom's vibrant life, he will be missed.

Our deepest sympathy from all of us at The Murray Franklyn Family of Company's.

Dear Meribeth & George ~ although I never met Tom personally, I remember how proud you were of all your wonderful sons. When Norman & I had dinner at our home one of the first things Meribeth did was to show me her family bulletin board with all the happy family pictures. It's good to know that you will have some many wonderful friends and family to help you deal with this tragedy. I can't begin to express my sorrow for you & all your family for the loss of this incredible young man.
I'm also so very sorry that I missed the funeral. Norman was on a 4-day fishing trip and I was at our cabin w/no paper or internet. A mutual friend called and told me about Tom and said that the funeral was going to be on Sat. So, I left the cabin early on Sat. a.m. only to find that I had missed the event. I would most certainly been there to offer whatever kind of support one can give at such a tragic time. Since then I've also looked up "hemochromatoisis" so as to better understand.
With much love and concern, Pat Dahl

To my cousin Catherine and the entire Newland Family: It was a 'double tragedy' when I learned of Tom's passing. I not only remember the 40+ years we all spent at Mission Beach together...but it seems like yesterday when my beautiful cousin Catherine married the man of her dreams, at the most "fairy-tale wedding" one could ever imagine! The big white tents, the catered food, and the oyster bar (and let's not forget the BRIGHT ORANGE wedding cake!! hee hee). When I was only 13-14 yrs old, Maribeth would ask me to 'keep an eye' on the younger boys... Tom and Matt... while she ran to town to do some shopping. They were the most adorable 'toe-heads'... blonde and tanned...running around Mission Beach. I would take them fishing, beachcombing, and I remember vividly that Tom 'had to have the crust cut off of his PB&J's!! Sam and Si were old enough to run around by themselves. In recent years, I was so excited that Tom and Catherine purchased their own little cabin in the 'Back Bay'.... on Mission Avenue. It is truly a doll-house and I really hope Catherine will hang on to it, as long as the lease options will allow. I was not by Tom's side in the past year during his illness, but please know that my thoughts and prayers were always there, hoping that he would pull through. God Bless you Catherine and the entire Newland Family. Tom was a ray of light, and I will really miss his infectious smile and his walks down the beach with Cat and Yukon! Take care, Sue Walton - Mission Beach

To Catherine and the whole Newland family. I am very saddened to hear of Tom's passing. He was a fun, kind, and driven man, whom will be sadly missed by many! Like a lot of the people here, I knew Tom from North and Everett. He was funny, and charming, clever and kind, handsome and sensitive, just an all around good guy. Words can not begin to sooth your grief, but perhaps for a moment they can make you smile and remember Tom through the eyes of his friends!

As a former classsmate and teammate from North Middle thru EHS, I was very saddened this evening to hear of Toms passing. Although we had not seen each other since our class reunion, I still keep fond memories of our school days as well as football days. Our 86-87 EHS football poster still hangs proudly in my shop that I glance at from time to time, and with that glance, I always see Tom as one of the faces. My teammate will be missed but never forgotten. My prayers go out to you all.

I'm so sad to hear that we have lost such a strong, wonderful, handsom, kind and funny man. I have known Tom since we were kids and well yes, I had a little crush on him in the sixth grade-hee hee but, then again, who didn't!??
The news is so shocking and I'm so incredibly sorry for the family. Catherine, Kids, Tom's brothers, Mr. and Mrs. Newland, and all
friends and family, my heart goes out to you... All of my heart and soul. I just can't express my sorrow. I just found out this evening so my grieving is just begginning...Tonight I am alone in the desert.
I went outside to sort of think about how fast life passes us by and to think about Tom. Tom was so athletic and strong!? Anyway,I live in the high desert (Joshua Tree) above Palm
Springs. The night was still with amazingly bright stars, moon, and planets. When thinking of Tom a HUGE gust of warm wind came
out of nowhere and blew for over an hour! It was magical. It was warm and comforting like he is okay. We are all going to be okay and he is with us looking out for us. The breeze, It reminded me
that we are all going to be together again someday. We need to be strong and carry on the best that we can especially for the children.
Catherine, you and the kids are welcome to come to the desert to talk/heal here anytime. I'd be more than honored to extend my welcome to the whole family.
I would like to leave you with one of my favorite Tom Newland memories:In 7th grade when the Go-Go's were HUGE, a bunch of us girls were going to lip-synch to "We Got the Beat" for the BIG talent show. Two of the Go-Go's (Rebecca and I)had gotten RAMONES concert tickets from a radio station on the same night as the talent show... Ummm wellll the Go-Go's were most likely going to be finished...or I was going to miss the concert. That is, ,until, my heroes TOM NEWLAND and JOHN CARLSON saved the show! Those two threw on a couple mini-skirts, some fishnets wigs, and neon make-up and SAVED the SHOW! They ROCKED it! The show was amazing!!!Not only did Tom and John save the show but they had the audience ROLLING on the floor laughing like crazy! I'm talkin' falling off of the chair hilarious!
Thanks Tom!
Here's to you my brother. ¡Salud! I love you.

God Bless the Newland family. I wish I were there.
I know how hard it is to loose somebody close. I'm so Incredibly sorry we lost such a special man, he will live in our hearts forever.
All of my love,
Angela Maynard

Cat and Newland Family,

Tom was such a huge part of the "Whaler Expeditions" up the Snake River and Lake Roosevelt in the last few years, the future boating trips just won't be the same...

My memories will be of Cap'n Tom and the experiences we had on the water, and my thoughts are now with you during this difficult time.

It is so difficult to find the words to express how much sadness is in my heart right now. Our families go back so far with so many memories and Tom was right there in the middle of it. Through elementary, middle and high school; fun times at the beach, family ski trips, weddings and many life celebrations. As a friend, mother, daughter, sister and wife my heart goes out to all of you.
All my love, Ellen

Dear Catherine and the entire, wonderful, loving Newland Family:
I was dismayed, shocked and extremely saddened to learn of Tom's premature departure from Earth and know profoundly that there is rather little any of us (and there are countless), try as we may, can say to truly relate to all of you left behind how indeed sad , sorry (and yes angry!) we are that he has been taken away far too soon from this life. Tom, Catherine and I were all very close in High School and remained so for many years thereafter. I cannot recall even one single time looking back throughout the years where there was not a warm, genuine friendly smile (often following a wise remark or clever joke!) on his face.
I, too, will never forget their deep, loving support and graciousness I felt surround and embrace me after my Significant Other of 10 years committed suicide in 2004. Their strong, kindhearted, deep-felt outreach of support was honestly one of the only pillars of strength which sustained me through that dark time and for that I will be grateful.
I Miss Tom and Catherine and the entire, lovely Newland Family with whom I was fortunate enough to be able to interact for many years while helping run J. Matheson in Everett.
With Sincere and Deepest of Sympathy,

I had no idea that Tom was sick-- my deepest sympathies go out to the Newland family. As kids at Mission Beach together in the Summers, I have some really fond memories of Tom. He was just a couple years older than I, which seems like nothing now but back then it may as well have been a decade-- he was one of "the big kids." We always look up to the big kids, don't we? Some of the big kids turn out to be people you continue to look up to even after that age difference seems to be gone, and Tom was one of those guys. I'll miss him.

I have such wonderful memories of Tom during the sunny, lazy, days at Mission Beach and many more at good ole EHS. I have equally wonderful memories of running around with Catherine in North Everett. What a blessing that two such kind, and energetic souls found eachother. We were so very sad to hear of Tom's passing. We will hold all of your wonderful family in our prayers in the days, months and years to come.
Sincerely,

"I am now in a place I call wide wide heaven...It includes all my simplest desires but also the most humble and grand. There are cakes and pillows and colors galore, but underneath this more obvious patchwork quilt are places like a quiet room where you can go and hold someone's hand and not have to say anything. Give no story. Make no claim. Where you can live at the edge of your skin for as long as you wish. This wide wide heaven is about flathead nails & the soft down of new leaves, wild roller coaster rides and escaped marbles that fall then hang then take you somewhere you could never have imagined in your small heaven dreams."
To Catherine and family we send our deepest thanks for sharing Tom with us.
