Elwood Allred Obituary

Elwood Malcom Allred, 86, passed away at home April 11, 2013. Malcom was born Oct. 11, 1926, in Provo, Utah, to Elwood Byron and Glendora Malcom Allred. He grew up in Escalante, Utah; Mesa, Arizona; and Shelley and Burley, Idaho, where his father was assigned to teach seminary. After graduating from high school in Burley, Malcom joined the Navy and served on the USS Iowa and in occupation forces in Japan during WWII.
Malcom began his career as a teacher and principal at Craigmont, Idaho. He was clever enough to hire a girl he admired from Burley, Barbara Hall, the daughter of Horace and Leona Hall. With no other eligible men available for miles, Barbara accepted his proposal and they began the first of their 58 years together when they were married at the Logan Temple on Aug. 5, 1954. Their first home was in Cocolalla, Idaho, where Bruce was born. They moved to Boise where sons Kent and Douglas were added to the family, and Malcom worked as assistant superintendent of curriculum for the state of Idaho. In 1961 he accepted a position in Logan at Utah State University in the Department of Elementary Education where he retired as a professor in 1989. Malcom most enjoyed teaching and interacting with his students. The last of their four sons, Gordon, was born in Logan. Though Malcom was often a public figure serving 22 years on the Logan City School Board and also as President of the Bridgerland Applied Technology College Board. He was a private man who appreciated time with family and friends.
A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Malcom served in many callings and will be remembered for his powerful teaching of gospel principles with testimony, insight and tenderness. He and Barbara served together in the Logan Temple and as missionaries in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada.
Malcom was a true gentleman, a master of the art of kindness and courtesy. He was a good friend, intelligent, witty, loved by children and devoted to his wife and family.
He was preceded in death by his son, Kent Everett Allred; his sister Eldene and her husband Steve Stites; and a great-grandchild, Joseph Gordon Allred. He is survived by his wife Barbara; three sons: Bruce and Marjorie Allred of Fruit Heights, Douglas and Linda Allred of North Logan and Gordon and Irene Allred of Providence; twelve grandchildren; five great grandchildren; as well as his siblings: Byron and Dolores (deceased) Allred of Preston, Idaho; Richard and Gay Allred of Logan, and Priscilla and Dean Richins of Albion, Idaho.
There is a viewing from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 16, 2013 at the Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 E. Center St. in Logan and from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m, on Wednesday, April 17, at the Hillcrest First Ward, 875 N. 1500 East in Logan, before the funeral service. Services begin at 12 p.m. with Bishop Brad Althouse conducting. Burial will follow at the Logan City Cemetery with military honors. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.allenmortuaries.net

Bob & I are so sorry to hear of Malcolm's passing. He was always so kind and considerate to us. I will never forget his sweet words to me, as I was holding our 18 month old son, Andy. He said, "I remember the day that that little fellow was born and how we all rejoiced!" Who else could say so much in a sentence? He will be missed. Love, Marian McCann

Dear Barbara, you'll never know how much of an impact you and Malcolm had on our lives. You with your wonderful way of teaching Wendy the violin and Malcomb who first decided to save Lundstrom park and got Greg Robinson and I to chair it! Do you remember those heady days when we took on the city and won to save a much loved and used park? We will miss his sweet smile and good heart. Love from Chris and Bobbie Coray. We are in Denmark right now or we would be there with you.

Just last week, as a friend and I were talking about how fast children grow and are gone, I quoted Malcolm. 35 years ago, in an elementary ed class, Malcolm said, "Sometimes in our home, an Aggie basketball game comes before homework." He then talked about setting priorities, especially those centered around family and making memories. His advice has come to me often over the years. He was also the one to suggest students ought to learn a trade at BATC so they could earn higher wages while finishing college. We, too, took his advice and our son made a solid wage while at USU. Malcolm was a kind man of keen intellect and common sense. He lives on in those students fortunate enough to have participated in his classes. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this very tender time.

We were blessed to be able to be neighbors with Elwood. His obituary sums up all the characteristics that we observed. Mortality has lost a great spirit and eternity has gained one. Malcom is the type of person we all should want to be when we grow up no matter what our age.

Dear Barbara and Family,

Sorry to hear of our loss. Malcolm was a gentleman and a scholar. He was our role model for everything good and right. He taught us much whether or not he was in front of the class. He will be missed. We would love to come and visit, but we are in Washington D. C.

We love you Barbara, Bruce, Doug and Gordon! Uncle Malcom set a beautiful example of love, courtesy and kindness for anyone who knew him. As his nephew, I was always so impressed with his incredible academic achievements, stature in the community and his devotion to family and faith. Thank you Uncle Malcom for being someone I could always admire and love. I miss you already but am glad that you with your beautiful parents.

Dear Barbara/family,
Such a brillant mind, and what a loving heart. We will cherish the memories we carry of Malcom. We, and our kids, grew up together on Lynwood & the neighborhood. Great times !
We are in St. George, so unable to attend the service; but will think of you and him especially that day.

Our love,
Jim/Linda
