I was just notified about Professor Shepard's passing and truly saddened. He was a great professor and even better person.
I still remember the day I asked him for help with getting a job at a Big 4 firm so I could gain some tax experience. I had spent months trying to get a foot in the door but with no success.
When I told Professor Shepard, he simply stated "I'll get you in but I'm going to call you in the future and you have to promise to return the favor for another student."
He was a man of his word, the very next week I had an offer and a few years later I had to make good on my promise. I will forever remember him as the godfather of the tax program at UH. Without his help, I wouldn't be where I am today.
R.I.P. Professor.

I was one of many of his UHLC students. Unremarkable but appreciative that he made an intimidating subject understandable. My heartfelt condolences for the loss of a good man. I'm sure he would have enjoyed the obituary. I did.

I only knew Ira from being students in Melton classes together. He made such interesting comments. I wish I'd known him better.

I remember Ira asking me at an event at UH where my wife was. I said in a low voice, "uh, I'm divorced ..." Ira beamed at me, and said "Oh! Then you're a graduate!" From then on I was okay. Thanks Ira. I owe you. Oh, and you were a great tax professor too -- I actually wanted to practice tax law at the firm that hired me, but they wanted me to have an LL.M. from NYU. Nah, I thought. I'm not going back for any more school. Still, I appreciate that I was never afraid of tax issues in the practice or on the bench. So, thanks for that too, Ira. Guess I owe you for that as well. Shalom my friend.

I had Professor Shepard for many classes at UHLC. He was both a teacher, mentor and adviser to me, and wrote excellent recommendation letters for me when i was going on interviews. Rest in peace.

He was a wonderful teacher, an outstanding example, and an even better man. He will be missed. The world is a poorer place without him in it.

Ira was unique in wonderful ways. He made a contribution to the tax bar that will last long beyond his time on earth and in Houston. He was a caring person and a good friend who I met when he was an associate at Paul Weiss and who became my friend in Houston

Ira was always a mensch, and he was one of my favorite colleagues at UHLC. I loved his sense of humor and his dedication to his students. His family is in my thoughts at this most difficult of times. May his memory be as a blessing.
