It has been while since Sterlings passing but he still remains with us and indeed is the source of many stories. If you knew Sterling you would have at least one story. He had some great sayings which I use to this day -- "I never desert a friend in their time of wealth".

We are sorry this is late but we have only sadly recently learned of the passing of a very dear friend Sterling. Mary and Sterling welcomed us to their home and to their holiday home. We met lots of their lovely friends and had some wonderful meals and outings with them. We do have very happy memories to treasure. We have been unable to see them for a few years due to health and family commitments but we will never forget them. Our thoughts go to Mary on this sad occasion and we send her our love.We miss her.

Sterling! I first met Ster when we were 13. (I am now 81) We were on opposing football teams organized by the older boys. We remained close as brothers the remainder of our lives. I adored Vera, Ster's mother. I drove Sterling home for lunch every school day, and lunch was waiting. Vera and Oc always invited me to the Northern Michigan, Black Lake cabin every summer. We would go to dinner with his father when he was in town. I was with Sterling to bury his father. After High School we parted ways for a few years - he was academic, I was military. Shortly after I returned to the US with my bride, there was a knock on the door. Edith answered and it was Ster. He told her "Hi, I'm Sterling, and I will be staying a while". Edith called me at work and asked who This Sterling was and should she let him in the house. We soon found him an apartment, picked out some furniture which we made him buy. A few years went by until Mary. I was best man for their wedding. We remained close over the long years. Our home in Florida became the half-way spot on their yearly pilgrimage to Key Largo, and we would get up to Madison when we could. As we both entered our "golden years" travel became harder. Last January I started having this nagging thought that I had to get up to see Ster for his 8oth birthday. Thankfully, a dear friend helped to drive us, and I was able to spend a few days with my oldest and dearest friend. I shall be forever thankful I saw him for the last time.
See you soon.

Mary and Sterling on motorcycle adventure

My dear friend Sterling,
Frank had it right, 'you did it your way'.
So many adventures and good times with Mary and Sterling. In fact, more than anyone else, I am responsible for them meeting. It was a good thing too, because Mary is probably the only person in the world who could have put up with some of his idiosyncrasies. She loved him, he loved her... what a deal.
I could write a whole book about Sterling and his very active imagination. He had more business ideas than you can shake a stick at. I'll relate one from the early 60s.
Sterling's mom, Vera and his stepdad, Ock, had a wonderful summer home on Mullet Lake near Cheboygan, Mich. On that lake was a ancient hotel, the Topinabee. It was for sale for only $60,000. It had 300 feet of lake front with a gigantic cement pier. The hotel was in poor shape as a result of a fire, but with some help resurrectable.
Neither of us had any money as it was early in our careers. But, we planned to sell shares to all the single people in Detroit and have them help us repair the place and get it working.
Sadly, we could not pull it off, but it was fun dreaming about it. Too bad because today that property is very valuable.
In fact that was the fate of many or our grand schemes, a great idea and then never pulling it off. But, we had such fun scheming....
Sterling was one of a kind. I am proud to have been his friend.
RIP Sterl and keep dreaming.

I feel a significant loss in learning of Sterling's passing. Working for him at Chrysler I found him to be more like a friend than a boss. I'll always have fond memories of him.
