Terry Tanger Obituary

William Terence Tanger passed gently at his East Side condo on July 13, 2011, at the age of 55. Preceded in death by his father James Tanger. Beloved husband of Jill (nee Foss) Tanger. Dear son of Bette Tanger-Glennon (Tom Glennon). Fond step-brother of Tom (Rachel) Glennon and Michelle Glennon. Nephew of Bill Terry and Stephen (Norma) Terry. Special cousin of Susie Rieck. Further survived by many loving family members and friends. Terry worked as a vice president / branch manager at Educator's Credit Union. Educator's Credit Union employees were very caring and supportive during his 2+ year battle with kidney cancer. Terry was known for his passion for music and signature guitar style. He was a veteran of the Milwaukee music scene, performing for over 30 years with several bands, including Those X-Cleavers and King Solomon. His lyrics spoke his heart. Per Terry's request, family and friends will gather to celebrate his life at 5:00 PM on Monday, July 18, 2011, at the Milwaukee Yacht Club, 1700 N. Lincoln Memorial Dr. Memorials to the Friends of Lakeshore Park, PO Box 71197, Milwaukee, WI 53211-7299. Please note that you intend your donation to be for the Terry Tanger bench. Terry, making music together basements together is among my fondest memories of growing up. I wish we could play together now. I would love to hear where your musical growth and tastes had taken you.

Getting ready to head up north to the family cabin. A place where the band would go to drink, make music, and do stupid stuff. I remember recording ourselves on my 8 track recorder. After each track we would all pile into my car and listen to ourselves. We would also consume alcohol. Then we would head back inside to record another track. Needless to say that each successive track got a little more raunchy. We had a blast. Terry on guitar, John on anything he could hit and make noise, and me on bass, with my pig nose amp. John just sent me a picture from that trip. Maybe he can post it. We were just a bunch of wild and crazy guys.

We are now at 13 years since you passed. I miss you my friend! I am so grateful for having known you and I will continue to keep your legacy and wonderful memories alive for as long as I am here on earth. Thank you for all the time and great gigs we spent together my dear friend and bandmate!

Today marks another year of your passing. I miss you Terry. Thank you so much for choosing me as your sound engineer for so many great bands. Those were by far the best times of my life! I will be eternally greatful for having been your friend and bandmate! Terry.... my four year battle with CLL (leukemia) seems to be over! I am now in remission! By the grace of God, I was given the chance to participate in a CAR-T cell clinical trial last October.... and it worked! I am so greatful to Keith Pulvermacher for all the phone calls to encourage me to look into it! I am sad that Keith did not get the chance to do the same .... I pray that we may all be together again... to play some songs... so... until then my dear friend....

I'm pretty sure Terry and I met while we were kids at Atwater School in Shorewood. He was a year or so older - an unbridgeable gulf at that age - and we didn't really know each other. I had heard his name, and maybe he had heard mine.

I had been in bands since I was 8-ish, but just with the kids on the block. Terry lived seven blocks away - like the other side of the planet. Somehow, in early high school, we ended up in a basement band together - The Lost Armadillos (thanks, Jean!) and played a Shorewood High dance, once. And other swampy Wisconsin summer parties. The beer and intervening years may have clouded my memory.

With John Gaskell on drums, Jon Spelt on vocals, Dave Willis on bass, and other local friends, we played songs we liked by New Riders of the Purple Sage, The Byrds, Flying Burrito Brothers, and others.

As far as I can tell, none of us thought we would get rich and famous this way, and time has apparently borne that out: none of us are making our living playing music. We were just having fun playing music with friends: a deeply satisfying thing to do.

I moved away from Milwaukee before Terry made music with most of the others sharing their memories here. Wouldn't it be great to grab our axes together somewhere, play some tunes we played with him, and hoist a cold one to his memory?

I knew Terry since he was a teenager, playing in various bands with my brother John, culminating with those XCleavers, then moving on to King Solomon.
I watched him grow as a guitar player and improve his vocals. He worked at it.
Then I had the opportunity (privilege) to play with him in Road Damage for 5 years. Some of the best times in my checkered music career.
He was like another brother.
I love him and miss him.

In 1967 my family moved from Cramer St. to northern Ill,,Terry would venture down & go on church rafting/canoeing trips with myself & friends (1969?) One trip he & I rode 4/5 hours in the back of a topper covered pickup truck sitting on sleeping bags & tents. We both had our cheap acoustics with us singing & playing. We probably sucked,,,but what great memories.

Worked with Terry and Those X-Cleavers during the early 80s, moving on after the Police show and graduating Marquette. I will always regret not staying in touch. Terry left an impression that is still strong for me today. He was an effortless and incredible musician - but always kind and generous with his time. I apologize I didn't know of Terry's passing until many years later. When I go to see St. peter, Terry will be the first person I will look up.

I miss you my dear friend. You will never be forgotten. Fond memories of you will last a lifetime and beyond for those family and friends that loved and admired you. Eleven years now.... not a day goes by without thinking about our times together as friends and bandmates. Some changes have come for me health-wise... I have CLL (leukemia). It is an up and down rollercoaster ride and hopefully they will continue to buy me some more time with new wonder drugs. But while I am still here, I continue to play the guitar and I also bought a new instrument today.... so now I will learn my first mandolin song.... Going to California by Led Zeppelin. No, I am not thinking about bluegrass tunes....yet :)

I said I was going to send you some lyrics to some songs I have written, but it would take up too much space to send them all... so here's an excerpt from one that goes through my head a lot. I remember telling you about it years ago when I said I wanted to record it with you. It is titled All for You

Young men can dream of the future and then try to find a shining star to guide them through
They make the pledge and sail out over the edge of the ocean to where the world is new
They drift so slowly into the mystic realm only to find themselves all alone
They find out too late the way of the world and what it takes to make it through to the Great Unknown
Old broken bones and broken hearts are torn apart and scattered in that black winter wind
Too many years of tears will leave you living with the fear of knowing things will never be the same again
I have drifted slowly into the mystic realm only to find myself all alone
I found out too late the way of the world and what it takes to make it to the Great Unknown
Someday they may stand at my grave say everything I ever did was All for You
Someday they will see the way you treated me was really only All for You
All for you
All for you...

It's just a break up song about anybody and everybody. Like you said... Nobody does anything all by themselves.
My right ankle and both lower bones got broken this year. They had to make a ten inch incision and insert two steel rods and a plate and screw them together last March 1st. I will be a big hit at the metal detector now anyway! I'm still hoping to walk normally again. I will start therapy next month I hope! I just want to ride a bicycle 200 miles in September to raise awareness and money for Kids with Cancer again this year.
Rest in Peace my friend. My world misses you too much.

The fond memories I have of Jim Tanger (Terry's Dad) taking Terry & I on adventures in the early 60's are forever in my heart. Mr. T didn't drive,,,so we'd ride the bus. The day would always end at Big Boy's downtown where Mr. Tanger would let us write our names on little rocks in the restaurant planters. Terry & I both lost our fathers the same year, and our mothers became closer. (Terry & I also)
Cramer St. forever! Lon S.

It is now ten years since we lost you, Terry. For 28 years I had the honor and privilege to be your sound engineer in many great bands. You are loved by so many people. I am forever grateful to have shared my time on earth with one of the kindest and most talented musicians I have ever known. I miss you my dear friend! By the grace of God, the prayers of friends and family, and the miracle of medicine, I am still here..... I will always treasure our time together as bandmates and friends! You will forever be fondly remembered, and never forgotten by your amazing friends and family!

Oh Terry, I wonder what you would have done with this year of no live gigging. Maybe you would have done the online jamming thing, or music-over-Zoom, but probably not. Maybe you would have just grinned and bore it and waited for music to start again, first on front porches and backyards, and then in houses - then clubs.

I'm sure you're rocking it with the rest of the musical greats behind the pearly gates.

Hard to believe that it was 9 years ago that we all lost a very good friend. When we first met in 1962 during Indian Guides. Then 10 years later to form our first band. I will always treasure all of my memories of gigs we played through high school and college, traveling to hear Those XCleavers play and record their first album. But by far what I will treasure most was the time Terry and I spent together during the last year of his life. Two or three days a week I would visit Terry at his home. We would play all of the songs that we played back in the 70's. It was like we had been playing them every day for the past 40 years. We would play cribbage for hours on end. The culmination of the last year was a recording we made with Jonny Gaskell, his fiddle player friend. I was able to see Terry twice after that, receiving his last recording. I will treasure it forever.

Oh my dear friend, I miss you so much! It is now nine years since we lost you. I often think about the great times we shared in our 28 years as band mates. It is difficult, as I get older, how time seems to pass by faster each year. This past year I had months of reflection of my life and thought I may be seeing you soon. I was diagnosed with CLL.. a form of leukemia. After this wake up call I have decided to try to live the time I have left as you did. With kindness, selfless compassion and laughter... I know, I know! It wont be easy for.... me. You showed us all how to live life to the fullest. The majority of my time with you was spent listening to your mastery of the guitar. But gladly, I am still learning from you! Thank you Terry!

I was at a book signing today and there were lots of old familiar faces from the punk days in Milwaukee. I got to talking in the evening with an old friend and we started talking about bands, and I mentioned the X-Cleavers and how much I loved your vocals, especially on a version you had done of Papa's Got a Brand New Bag. I remembered going to the bank on Farwell & Brady and walking up to the teller line and thinking, whoa, there's the singer from the X-Cleavers! I was shocked to learn that you had passed away. Wanted to share this memory. Peace and condolences to your family, and all your friends.

I do remember being a groupie and free roadie because it is just my nature to help people wherever I go. One night at Steny's in the Sand you called me over and you gave me some money. I did not ask for it. You have no idea how much that meant to me then and will until we meet again my young frIend. It was never about money. You always made me feel included. Thanks for the good memories!
I am glad I had the chance to play guitar and sing some Neil Young songs for you. We were both big fans. I wish you could have been with me at The Bridge School Concert a couple of years ago. We would have had a blast! I have written dozens of songs and always wanted to do some recordings with you. My world misses your keen ear and soft touch on the fretboard.
I will post some lyrics here in the future, just for you.
Rest in Peace my young friend.

He was an extraordinary musician and a charismatic person on stage- I never knew him, but always admired him, and loved the music so much. When I was growing up in Milw. I went to see the X Cleavers all the time and memorized all the words like a crazed fan, but it really made a difference to me and gave me energy to follow my instincts. Sending my sincere condolences to his family and loved ones.

38 years ago Crazy Dave Willis introduced Terry to me in the summer of 1973 at his house on Cramer St. I want to thank Dave for that life changing moment....We jammed in the yet to be Cleaver clubhouse that same week.....We were all classmates///bandmates...team mates..played every chance we could....lunch hour we would jam...then on the weekend find another place to jam....camping at the parks....hanging at the Ludwig Van Ear record store ....later became Atomic Records ....our pic is in the Shorewood high year book there.
Lost Armadillos was one of the 8 + bands we shared and had a blast playing together in.....Those Xcleavers evolved from alot of friends hanging and learning....Terry turned us all on to his musical forte and diversity....Salute to "Mr.T" ///" TANG " ///"King Bop" Life with Terry was more than A to Z.....I never laughed so hard ...cried so loud......felt so proud or have Mr. T as a Brother in Life...!!!!Our last words sum it all up ,,,,,"I LOVE YOU" ++++Say H i To Jimi !!!!!! johnny Gash Gaskell

To the Tanger family,
We are sending our sympathies to all of your family as customers of ECU. We worked with Terry many times at the Park Place branch long ago. He was always so professional and friendly and always made us feel comfortable and reassured of our business because he handled everything so very meticulously! In fact we still call the present person by Terry's name when we go in for business. A good thing but sort of embarrassing as his name is different. My husband told me of Terry's passing when he read the recent ECU newsletter. He made an impression on us for sure. Our wishes that God's arms surround you with His grace and love so that you can endure this difficult time by this precious loss. Our prayers are with you.

Just found out and am so sorry to hear the news. I've known Terry for many years. First meeting him in high school , we quickly became a family (John, Sue, Dave, Dave, Pam, and all of our extended families) Every day I'd do my homework in the basements listening and dancing when our favorite songs were played. Terry would lift our spirits with his talent of playing all those silly and popular songs which we loved. Terry put his own signature on that music. Endless hours at his house with Bette and Pepi. I'll never forget when we put used Christmas trees on his entire front porch as a joke. The cop didn't think it was funny. The funniest thing was when Terry put a rubberband on his head as a headband since he had long hair, and the rubberband flipped up to make a Bam Bam hair doo. I laughted so hard. All those practices, gigs, loading and unloading the white truck, and hanging out with our families. Not to mention making t-shirts and putting up band flyers.Terry was a huge part of my life. Terry and Jill were always welcoming when I would come back to visit Milwaukee. Together making me feel at home again. Jill this is such a great loss to you, I hope you find comfort in knowing friends and family are here for you, and Bette too. Terry's warm smile and kindness is forever in my heart. We have been so lucky to have such a great man in all our lives. Thank You Terry for making the world a better place. Love ya.

Writing this though tears as I just learned of Terry's passing through the King Solomon website. Although I had seen Terry several times over the last two years he never let on about his battle. Typical for him not to want to bring anyone down he only had smiles and good tidings every time we spoke.Looking over the comments here I am one of an endless number of people who crossed paths with him and considered him a friend.
I met Terry when he worked for 1812 record store and we both shared a broad range of musical styles (Terry knew if a song was good it didn't matter if it was rock, country, reggae, or jazz). While he was with the X-Cleavers Terry passed tapes with their music to me that I would play when I worked as a bartender at the Tracks tavern and I also supported them as a photographer for the Express newspaper. Many many good shows/times over the years with Terry saying "hi Stork" when he spotted me in the crowd. One of Milwaukee's best musicians and human beings. He was like water: pure,refreshing,essential...."you don't miss your water until it's gone". Wish I had known of his situation so that maybe I could have told him this face to face, but I think he knows. Jah love Terry, you will be missed but not forgotten.

In the 1980s my band (the Johnnies) backed the X-Cleavers on many a weekend gig at Teddy's and Century Hall. Being not from Milwaukee we probably backed every new wave/new music band from the Milwaukee area from 1980 thru 1986. Of all the Milwuakee musicians I got to know over that time period Terry was perhaps the most humble as well as being one of the nicest. Terry had a 1970s Mocha Tele modified with a custom walnut pickguard and I had a 1970s Mocha Strat modified also with the same style/make of walnut pickguard. When they were side by side they looked like a matching set, we used to tease each other about it. God bless Terry and Family. Sincerely, Andy Victor

Hi Terry,

I just wanted to stop by and say "Hi". I was thinking about you last night, remembering when I used to come watch you play. You'd see me and have that welcoming Tanger smile that always made me feel so fuzzy and warm inside. Hehe, I also remember about 14 years ago or so when you saw me with a cigarette in my hand, and said with a deep voice "Therese, what is that in your hand?" and I pretended to be shocked, and said "nothing". Dude, you are seriously going to be missed forever!!!

So many times I've called you when I was down, having problems, or just frustrated and you always seemed to be the voice of reason. Your cool and calm demeanor was a shining example of how a man with integrity should be. Terry was a kind and caring man. He loved to play and we loved to listen. Play on......

I was introduced to Terry by mutual UWCU friends. Immediately, I understood why he was so loved and respected by them. His manner was laid back and unassuming, yet warm and inviting. I am grateful for the crossing of our paths.

Terry--heaven just got a little "cooler". Didn't know you well, but even with all the comings and goings with King Solomon over the years, nobody could match your chill. You just took it all in stride. The scene will never be the same and you will be missed.

Terry's infectious smile will be missed by all. Though I knew him through business, I feel like I lost a friend. It was ALWAYS a pleasure to see him. Gone too soon.

Terry, I listened to Those XCleavers, bought records from you, saw you at country punk shows (specifically Jason and the Scorchers), got asked about you by my Mom, and knew how important you were to Milwaukee's music scene. I move away and lost touch with many casual, yet important, acquaintances. You will be missed.

My you rest in peace My Friend.. You will always be remembered in my heart. You were one of the best men I have ever known. And I am honored to have been able to have known you and call you my friend. One of the last things you told me was "Keep playin your tele Dave" and I have and always will. Jill, I am so very sorry for your loss. May you find peace in this trying time.. My heart is with you and Terry both.

I knew Terry from 1812 Overture Records and Tapes, where we worked together . I remember him always being full of life and truely a kind soul. Even though it was 33 years ago, I have often talked to people about this man and his ways. He left a lasting impression on me, and I am sure he did with anyone who ever met him. His departure from our world is a tragic loss, he will always be remembered and loved.
