ANITA BERKOWITZ Obituary

Anita B. Berkowitz, 104, passed away on Friday, March 23, 2012 at Village Shalom. Graveside services will be held at noon on Tuesday, March 28, 2012 at Adath Joseph Cemetery in St. Joseph, MO. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, March 29th at 1:00 pm at The Temple, Congregation B'nai Jehudah, followed by a reception. Kindly omit flowers. The family suggests contributions to The Temple, Congregation B'nai Jehudah Rabbis' Discretionary Fund and/or Brandeis University Library Fund.   Anita was born Thursday, Sept. 12, 1907, to Charles Coleman and Ruth Esther Brady of St Joseph, MO. She attended the University of Illinois- Champaign where she received her B.A. and M.A. degrees. She met Abraham Berkowitz at Hillel's first house at the university and they were married on March 29, 1931.  Abraham preceded Anita in death in 1961. Abraham and Anita lived in Mattoon, IL, where they raised their two sons. and Anita gave her energies and volunteered as president of the Central Illinois Council of B'nai B'rith Women and helped establish the Mattoon Chapter. She was on the board of the Anti- Defamation League of B'nai B'rith, Regional Board member of American Association of University Women and actively engaged in county and statewide Democratic Women's Clubs. She and Abraham moved to Kansas City, MO. in 1958. Anita taught at Southwest High in the Kansas City Public School District for over twenty years until she retired. A generous volunteer, Anita   tutored in her home for thirteen years, teaching English to Vietnamese, Spanish and Russian immigrants. Anita was an early worldwide traveler and photographer having visiting over sixty countries on every continent except Antarctica. She felt that through her travels, the knowledge and experiences she gained were invaluable to her and her students. She volunteered at The Nelson-Atkins Art Gallery, Brandeis University Annual Book Sale, The Temple, Congregation B'nai Jehudah and its Sisterhood. Anita was a life member of Brandeis University National Women's Committee and a benefactor of Brandeis Libraries, a life and honorary member of the American Association of University Women, National Council of Jewish Women, and Hadassah, and a member of Friends of the Library of UMKC, Truman Medical Auxiliary, Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy, The Nelson-Atkins Museum, Nelson Museum Friends of Art and Heart of America Shakespeare Festival. Anita was a superb cook and receiver of culinary prizes in national publications. Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Nathaniel C. Berkowitz and wife Myra of Sausalito, CA and Edward H. Berkowitz, Ph.D, of Palo Alto, CA, her sister, Gertrude B. Kaufman of Silver Spring, MD, four grandchildren: Ethan Berkowitz of Anchorage, AK, Zachary Berkowitz of San Francisco, Ruth Berkowitz of Hood River, OR, Michael Berkowitz of Portland, ME, and seven great-grandchildren. I also knew Mrs. Berkowitz from Southeast High School( class of '68) . Occasionally I would see her out in front of her house and stop to visit. She was very much a lady who commanded respect from all who knew her. I also had occasion to see her at Village Shalom when my mother in law was living there before she passed on. She was always a cheery ray of sunshine. I am so sorry for your loss.

Ms. Berkowitz was one of my first teachers at Southeast High School who exhibited a genuine interest in my education. And Ms. B, please forgive me for not picking you up for the 30th reunion of the Class of '62.

I,too, was a student in Mrs. Berkowitz's Spanish class and also a member of the Spanish Club for which she was the faculty sponsor at Southeast High School. Over the years, I have thought of her often, wishing now that I had made the effort to go see her and to tell her how much I appreciated her. Her methods of teaching Spanish also helped me greatly with English grammar, etc. I continue to be fascinated by her long and full life, especially her travels. She was a great teacher and humanitarian.

Please know that the family of Anita will be remembered in my prayers,I have lost a very dear friend. I lived across the street at the Villas from Anita and we were dear friends for over four years.I was sad to leave her when I moved to Utah, we had many good times together.My daughter and I saw her in December and we said good-bye then to a lovely lady.Nathaniel,Myra and Edward,I really loved and admired your Mother.God Bless,Mary Betty Green

Mrs. Berkowitz was my teacher at Southwest High School. She was extraordinarily tenacious and maintained just the right degree of spunk for all of us "witty" teens. God bless her for what she imparted. In spite of ourselves we LEARNED!

I too was taught Spanish (2 yrs) at Southeast by Mrs. Berkowitz. It doesn't seem to have been that long ago that I talked with her at the Waldo Library. We spoke of her career at SE. We also discussed her students and her following the career of Logan Vincent Cole. She told me to take her her home (which I did). We sat and talked a little longer in the drive way about her family and right before she went into the house, she turned and asked me, "Was I a good teacher?" To this I answered, yes you were. More teachers are needed like you today. Your mother made an impact on many students at Southeast High. May God bring you comfort during this period in your life.

I volunteered with Anita for several years at the Nelson Museum. She was always interested in everyone and everything. I so enjoyed talking to her - she was a unique person. So sorry for your loss, but what an intersting life she led.

Mrs. B kindly mentored me as a junior at SOUTHEAST H.S., allowing me to assist her in freshman English...this must have been in 1959-60. What a wonderful woman!

I enjoyed 4 years of Spanish with Mrs. Berkowitz at Southeast High School as did so many other students. I didn't appreciate her sense of humor until I was an adult (Ha!), but what a dedicated teacher. I am sorry for your loss but I see that she continued to lead a full life.

Mrs. Berkowitz was my Spanish teacher at Southeast high(1967-1969). Her class was always exciting. Being back in the building as an educator I think of her and those times as I pass her classroom on the second floor. A couple of weeks ago I decided to resurrect my Spanish by studying the language again. I can still see her in front of the class drilling us on vocabulary and testing us using her collection of Spanish records. Her memory will live on through that Spanish class.

My husband was taught Spanish by Mrs. Berkowitz at SOUTHEAST high school in the mid 1960's. He has some great stories to tell from her class, always enjoying her responses to his clowning abilities. He had no idea she taught so long at Southwest, also. Mrs. Berkowitz was a person who made huge contributions to the lives of the young people she taught. Her spirit lives on!

I am so sorry for your loss. I recently spoke of Mrs. Berkowitz regarding the Folk Dancing Club at Southwest High School. I was a Spanish student and a member of the Folk Dancing Club. I still remember some of the Russian dances and polka's she taught us. I admired Mrs. Berkowitz's spunky personality, and engery when she taught us various folk dances.
