I'm so saddened. I was a close friend of Barry's growing up....back when we shared the Beatles after our Hebrew School days. We had re-connected about a year ago but living in different states did not get a chance to get together again. I'll always remember him with a smile and I wish many happy memories for his family.

If not for Barry and his long-ago Lawrence band, Tofu Teddy and the Brown Rice Cowpeople, I seriously doubt that I would've met the love of my life, Barney. We were both attending one of their shows at what used to be Off the Wall Hall (currently the Bottleneck) and serendipitously met, as he was getting ready to leave town for a while & had come from Topeka for a friend's birthday--a friend who happened to be my neighbor. We were so lucky to be able to enjoy many Tofu Teddy gigs after that, some celebrating the lives and anniveraries of others, as well as birthdays. Some of the Tofu Teds played last October for us, as I surprised my husband by hiring them to play for our 25th anniversary. The Teds were the only band my husband really wanted to dance to, which speaks to their energy and joy. I loved every minute of that evening, and will treasure it always--just as I will treasure all the moments, few as they were, that I was able to share with Barry. My deepest condolences to your family. I hope that at some point it helps you in your grieving to know that he was loved by many who were uplifted by his joyous spirit.

My sincere condolences to the entire family. I haven't seen Barry in years, but have fond memories of growing up across the street from him (on Delmar) in the 1960's. I know he will be missed.

To Laura,Leah and Sidney, I am so sad to hear of Barrys passing. He was my mentor and teacher and most of all a wonderful friend. The times we all spent together at Drum Camps in Pa. are some of my best and most sacred memories. Barry was my inspiration to follow a path that has brought me so much joy and has inspired many. I often mention his name when I tell my story and am so sorry for your loss. I wish I could be there to honor his life and work. I will continue to use his name and sing his song "Bright Light" to all the children I perform for in my work in schools and youth groups. My prayers are with you and the family. To all of Barry's Family,
I have known Barry since I was a music therapy student at UMKC in 1994. He was indeed a wonderfully inspiring music therapist who could relate to people of all ages. He had a wonderful sense of humor and we enjoyed sharing time together whenever we could at music therapy conventions or Assessible Arts 99 Drums events. We traded CDs with each other and always encouraged each other during good and bad times. I am saddened by his passing and miss Barry tremendously. It's a tragedy that we will have no more time to spend together in this lifetime.
My prayers go out to his wife and two daughters.
Sincerely,
Steve Barrett, MT-BC

To Barry's family,
I am so sorry to read the news. My prayers are with all of you.
I met Bongo Barry at a teacher training workshop hosted by Accessible Arts. His approach to teaching was amazing, inspiring, and inclusive. I admire his ability to not only make music but to share it with others. I owned a CD of Barry's and asked him for permission to choreograph to one of the songs years ago, which he graciously allowed me to do.
His gift of music and education will be very much missed and live on in those of us who are better for having received such a gift.
