Gus Glaros Obituary

Gus Glaros was born Constantinos A. Glaros on Nov. 7, 1920, to Alex Glaros and Maria Glaros in Merced Falls, California in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. His family moved to San Francisco, California, where his older brother, John helped his brothers, Steve and Gus to get jobs as newspaper boys for the San Francisco Examiner. The family then relocated to Lodi, California where Gus's Father bought a 5-acre piece of land and planted Tokay grapes. Gus graduated from The Old Tokay High School and was drafted into the Army during WW2. He was in the Army Corp of Engineers and drove a caterpillar tractor and helped build the Burma Road where he was stationed during WWII. While in the service he sent all his checks to his mother, and she banked it until he was safely at home. He took his savings and bought a bare piece of property and planted it with Tokay grapes. He met his future wife, Lemonia, through a friend, who had married her sister. Gus and Lemonia eloped to Reno in August, 1948. The families were consternated by this, and they remarried on the steps of the Greek Orthodox Church in Stockton. Gus is well known for his love for fishing adventures. He also enjoyed making Zinfandel wine, and enjoyed gardening. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lemonia, his brothers; John, Stanley and Steve Glaros. He is survived by his son, Alex Glaros and wife, Thanh; his daughter, Maria Hoteling and husband, Michael; Gus's grandchildren, Orion, Ben, Martina, Andrew and Kosta; and great-grandchildren, Kosta and Salish. Friends are to visit Thursday, January 30 from 8 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at Lodi Funeral Home. A chapel service will be held at the 12 noon on Thursday at the funeral home with the committal to follow at Cherokee Memorial Park. Lodi Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.
