Robert Van Bomel

It was during the summer of 1967 that one of my friends, Bob Spang, whose family lived next door to the Graingers in Indian Village, and I decided that we were going to sneak our family cars out at 1:00 AM in the morning. Keep in mind that we were only 14 years old. As planned, I drove to the Spang's house at 1:00 AM, parking in front of the Grainger's house. Bob Spang backed his family's car out of his driveway and parked beside me. We got out of the cars to discuss our route. What we had not planned on was that Ed and Ginny Grainger were arriving home from a dinner party. Ed knew us very well, as we were good friends with his son, Jeff. Ed parked his car and walk over to the two of us and asked us what were we thinking? He explained to us the negative consequences of what we were about to do and how it could effect our lives for many years to come. He made a deal with the two of us that night. He said that if we returned the cars to our houses and agreed to never attempt such a stunt again until we were licensed to do so, he would keep this incident between us. We were true to our word as Ed was true to his. Over the 48 years that have passed, I have often thought about that night and how Ed gave us a second chance. He truly was a man of his word and I will always remember him for that.
Sincerely,
Bob Van Bomel

Our sincerest sympathies to Ginny and all the Graingers.
In Rye or here in Vero Beach, Ed was always the voice of
reason -- and we always listened. Rye and Vero Beach are
lesser places today.
