I've just completed a documentary on the civil rights movement which the latter third of focuses on the turbulent time in Augusta, Georgia in May of 1970. Mr. LaRue is mentioned in the course of the story, as he was a founding member of a group who benevolently worked for strides in race relations and the improvement of life for impoverished African Americans. I am entering his name into the dedication of the credits. My heart and prayers are extended to the family.

I want Leon's family and friends in Louisville and other areas of the country to know about his stay in Augusta after leaving the military. He played an important role in the history of Augusta, Georgia, during the late '60s and early '70s. He was instrumental in bringing Howard University medical and law students to Augusta to assist in legal and medical matters pertaining to the May 11, 1970, riot. He participated in many community activities before and following the riot. His leadership ability shone during that turbulent period.
Leon was neat, always clean. He was uniquely Leon LaRue. I will miss him dearly. May God bless his soul.

I have known Leon LaRue for 20 years. He was one of a kind. We had many interesting and enjoyable times together when he would call me to discuss a legal issue or sometimes just show up at my law office. When my daughter was born, Leon arrived with a huge yellow stuffed duck. I miss him. He loved his family and his country. My condolences to the entire LaRue family and especially Leon's loving sister Benita. l
