Jones County, GA- William Darrell Bowden, Sr., 76, of Skinner Road, died Saturday, December 01, 2012, in a local hospital. The family will greet friends from 6:00 - 8:00pm, Monday at Bridges Funeral Home in Gray. Funeral services will be held at 11:00am, Tuesday, December 04, 2012, at First Baptist Church in Gray, with Dr. Steve Albanese officiating. Burial, with military honors, will follow at Cedar Ridge Cemetery in Gray. The Jones County Sheriff's Department Honor Guard will serve as pallbearers.
Mr. Bowden, the son of the late William Eddie C. Bowden and Nannie Mae Hattaway Bowden, was born in Macon on November 01, 1936, and had lived in Jones County for the past forty-two years. After completing high school, Mr. Bowden worked for Southern Crate and Veneer for thirty-five years, as a Court Security Officer for the United States Marshall's Service for fifteen years and served twenty-two years as a Deputy Sheriff with the Jones County Sheriff's Office, eventually serving as Chief Deputy. In addition to his many years in law enforcement, Mr. Bowden earned the rank of Master Sergeant in the United States Army National Guard, retiring honorably from the 48th Infantry Brigade Headquarters in Macon. In his free time, Mr. Bowden was a former member of the Lions Club, the Middle Georgia Railroad Association, the Central Georgia Model Railroad Club, the Central Georgia Railway Historical Society and the Jones County Cruisers. He also attended First Baptist Church of Gray and was a member of the Sara B. Sunday School Class.
Mr. Bowden is survived by his devoted wife of fifty-five years: Betty Jo Hinton Bowden; sons and daughter-in-law: Darrell Bowden, Jr. and Edward Keith and Kelly Bowden; daughters and sons-in-law: Nancy and Dale Shreve and Sandra and Billy Stuckey; brothers and sisters-in-law: Benjamin and Nell Bowden, Carl Bowden, Jerry Bowden and Wayne and Paula Bowden; special cousin and spouse: Benny and Janet Bowden; special friends: Joe and Ruth Evans; and by his grandchildren and spouse: Kyle, Cole, Katie, Kristin and William and his great-granddaughter: Kayla.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the First Baptist Church of Gray Building Fund, Post Office Box 429, Gray Georgia 31032-0429 or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Attn: Honor Memorial Department, Memphis, Tennessee 38105.
