Edmund Ervin Obituary

WATERVILLE -- Dr. Edmund N. Ervin, beloved local pediatrician, died June 1, 2011, at Mt. St. Joseph's Nursing Home at age 96.

Born in Waterville in 1915 to Caroline and Robert Ervin, he attended local schools and graduated from Colby College in 1936. He received his M.D. at John's Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1940. His internship was at the Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia. Upon completion, World War II broke out and he enlisted as a flight surgeon in the Navy. He served in the South Pacific for several years becoming a Lt. commander.

Dr. Ervin met Hilary Allen in San Francisco and they married in 1944. After deciding to become a pediatrician, he studied under Dr. Emmett Holt at New York University becoming an instructor and a fellow. Two children were born: Robert and Edmund. In 1948 he returned to Waterville and established a pediatric practice.

In 1950, a third child was born, Hilary Elizabeth. She was found to be disadvantaged. This led to Dr. Ervin's dedication to helping other people with this concern. He helped to found Ken-a-Set Association for the Retarded now known as "Skills." His distinguished medical contribution was in the field of mental retardation. His concern for all his patients will be remembered by many, many people who considered him "special." The awards, honors and commendations Dr. Ervin has received are endless including an Honorary Doctor of Science degree from Colby College and a citation for pioneering efforts for the Developmentally Disabled from the American Academy of Pediatrics.

In 1958, he established the second comprehensive clinic for the developmentally disabled in the United States at MaineGeneral hospital in Waterville and Augusta.

Medical colleges uniformly express great respect and admiration for his work in both his medical practice and related voluntary fields. There is a strong liking for him as a man as well. A generous person with great spirit, he enjoyed golf, gardening, antiquing and travel.

Survivors are his wife, Hilary; sons Edmund and wife Ann, Robert and wife Julia; and six grandchildren, Katherine Kaplan and husband Andrew, Robert W. Ervin, Joseph Ervin, Margaret Ervin, Caroline Ervin and Edmund S. Ervin and his fiancŽe Ericka Roy; also a great-grandchild, Miles Kaplan.

We give grateful thanks to the Mt. St. Joseph staff, courteous, kind, helpful and skilled. We are privileged to know this facility and its outstanding people.

A celebration of Dr. Ervin's life will be held at his home this summer.

Those wishing to make a donation in honor of Dr. Ervin's life may do so to The Edmund N. Ervin Pediatric Center, MaineGeneral Health, Office of Philanthropy, P.O. Box 828, Waterville, ME 04903.

Dear Hilary,
My condolences to you and your family on Dr. Ervin's passing. Even though I am 63, I still think of him as "my pediatrician" because he was always the most thoughtful, calming and kind expert pediatrician and the model for the best of physicians. What a wonderful legacy you two have created through the healing arts and the visual arts, providing hope, joy, inspiration and support in the past, at present and for the future. With sympathy to you on Ed's passing and gratitude for his life and good works, Jo Champlin Casey

Mrs Irvin and family my condolences for your loss. I didn't know Dr Ervin but I have a son with Aspergers. If not for the Ervin pediatric center founded by your husband we never would have been able to find out as early as we did. Because we did he has had much help through school and from outside assistance. Because of that help he has grown enormously and I feel he will be a great contribution to our society. As a parent of a child with a mental disability you can truly understand our appreciation. I'm sure you have heard many stories of how he helped others. Dr Ervin was truly an angel to us in this life. I'm certain he will be with all the other angels in heaven. Thank you so much for sharing him with us even when we didn't know him.

Hilary and family: I have so many memories as a child of wonderful gatherings at "the farm" in Albion. And I remember, so clearly, how kind Dr. Ed was towards me. He's up there where the angels sing.

So sorry to hear of Dr. Ervin's passing. I was raised in waterville and he was our doctor. I fondly remember him coming to our home many times. When I had pneumonia in 1963, my mom called him, after being told there was nothing the doctors could do, on his ski trip vacation and he came home, walked in the room at Thayer and told my parents, with hands on his hips, " okay, you and you go home, he then got a private nurse and got me better fast. He cared for my brother mike, who had asthma, he helped my parents when my older brother was in trouble at coburn, shall I go on. Stern but loving. When I was in WTVL 2 summers ago, I stopped by the house on Mayflower Hill road, unfortunately , no one was home. What a wonderful man. My parents Leo and Juliette Libby (Labbe) thought so highly of him. God bless you Jo-Ann Libby

My deepest sympathy goes out to the Ervin family. He was my pediatrician in the 60's and very early 70's. Even now I can remember his witty demeanor and comforting drawl, and the lolipops he'd give out! I also remember him coming to our house to take care of my brother, sister and me when we needed to be seen after hours. Dr. Ervin is an example of what today's doctors should strive to be. Thanks for taking great care of us. Rest in peace.

My condolences to the Ervin family. I remember visits to the office on School Street - the Noah's Ark hanging in the office - and the friendly staff. I also fondly remember Dr. Ervin's comforting home visits when I was a very ill 6 yr. old in the mid 60's. Dr. Ervin was our children's pediatrician. He was always there for us and once told me he worried about our children when they were sick just as much as we parents did. He was a true humanitarian and will be fondly remembered by the many he served in so many ways. Our sincere condolences to the Ervin family.

"Doc" was truly a great friend and traveling buddy. I spent many a Wednesday traveing around Maine looking for the best restaurants serving bread pudding and the latest in icecream stores. I have wonderful memories which continue to entertain me from time to time. He truly is missed.

Many yrs ago I worked as a supervior at Seton and Thayer and thus worked with Dr Ervin,..many long nights with pediatric patients in the emergency room. Despite being there at times until dawn ,after working all day , Dr Ervin was the kindest physician to every child that walked or was carried in thru the door. Deepest sympathy to his family who inspired him to be one of our best.

I met Dr. Ervin when I was working at Ken-a Set with his daughter Hilary. He was a kind and loving father that knew sometimes loving someone means letting them go. He provided opportunities for handicapped adults to live a fuller and more independent life outside of their parents home or locked down institutions. He will be missed by so many.

Dr. Ervin was an amazing man. The Edmun Ervin Center at Seton hospital has been a god send to our family. I don't know where we would be if someone like the GREAT DOCTOR hadn't come along. His work was life changing for those of us with special needs children and his name will forever carry on through the many resources he established. Society has suffered a terrible loss... My condolences to his family and many friends. Our prayers are with you..... The Family of Tyler D. Johnson
