Arthur Stevenson Obituary

Arthur David
Stevenson, 87
WINDHAM -- Arthur David Stevenson, 87, of Windham, died April 20, 2010, at the Maine Veterans' Home in Scarborough after a prolonged illness. He was born in Everett, Mass., on Sept. 11, 1922, the son of the late Herbert and Alice (Ramsden) Stevenson.
In 1941, at the age of 18, he joined the Merchant Marines and served four years during World War II. He returned to the U.S. in October of 1945. Three years later he met the love of his life, Phyllis Taylor, and they married the following year.
In 1958, the couple moved to Windham. Art was a devoted husband and wonderful father to their four children. Known for his sense of humor, he reveled in embellishing stories for family and friends alike.
In 1967, Art and Dick Southard organized a chapter of Little League in Windham. He found his niche as a coach and enjoyed the role immensely, casting a wide net of influence over the community. He coached the Bears to the Championship that first year, plus the following two years. His passion for sports kept him coaching for 30 years into his 70s.
Among his many awards were Coach of the Year for the State of Maine and several championship seasons. He was later active with Little League Girls Softball in Windham. His sports columns appeared in various local newspapers.
Art's multiple interests included photography, writing, art and travel. He and Phyllis traveled extensively from 1975 on spanning most of the U.S. and several countries beyond. He was a very patriotic man, exhibiting love for the Flag and the country it symbolizes. He valued libraries and was a popular patron before his illness.
He worked at Porteous for many years, and then took a position as Unit Manager at Maine Medical Center where he worked for 17 years until his retirement in 1988.
Art is survived by his wife of 60 years, Phyllis; his children, Lynne Howe, Joyce Berk, Rick Stevenson, and Rob Stevenson and his wife Becca; grandchildren, Jake Thompson, Sarah Thompson, Shane Howe, Derek Stevenson and Brock Stevenson; two great- grandsons, Adam and Caleb Hayes; and many beloved nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by seven brothers and sisters.
A celebration of life will be held at the Friends Meeting House Church, Windham on Saturday, May 8, 2010, at 2 p.m. Arrangements by the Dolby Funeral Chapel, Windham.

While I did not know Arthur personally, I felt his presence and influence through stories told to me by my mother, Norma Stevenson Player. He was her favorite "uncle" as they were only 16 months apart in age and so grew up together. She is missing him already. Much love and sympathy to you and to your family from ours. My heart broken condolences, Art was a mentor for me and will always be a part of my life. He always told my story of the homerun that I hit at Westbrook when they where intentionally walking me. He made a point to pass that on to my family. My deepest sympathy to Phyllis and family.
