Alexander Brams Obituary

Alexander Brams
Alexander Brams, 92, of Moravian Village, Bethlehem and formerly of Brighton, N.Y., passed away Thursday, October 18, 2007 in the care of his loving family. He was the husband of the late Catherine J. (VanAnkeren) Brams, who died in January of this year. Born in Warsaw, Poland, he was the son of the late Mendel and Zlata (Brams) Geilingold. He studied in Warsaw until the war. Alexander served in the Polish, British and Isreali armies and was a Holocaust survivor, who fought in the Israeli War of Independence. He lost 27 close relatives to the Holocaust. Upon arriving in the United States, he was initially an auto mechanic during the day and a factory worker at night and self-studied engineering. Alexander retired as a chief engineer for Monroe County, N.Y.He was a member of Congregation Brith Sholom, Bethlehem, and former member of Brith Kodesh of Rochester, N.Y. He was an active skier, ice skater and swimmer, winning medals in senior division swimming competition, swimming into his 80s. Alexander enjoyed gardening, furniture refinishing and was a very active man who loved reading and was well read. Survivors: Daughter, Johanna Brams and her husband, Fred Miller, of Bethlehem; son, David Brams and his wife, Christine Doyle, of Belmont, Mass.; brother, Sewek Tsur of Jerusalem; granddaughters, Jessica and Sara Brams-Miller and Catherine, Leah and Shealagh Brams. Services: 2 p.m. today Friday in the Long Funeral Home, 500 Linden St., Bethlehem, where friends may call from 1 p.m. until time of services. Mr. Brams was consistently an inspiration to everyone that met him. His story of faith, tragedy and endurance should serve as to encourage many generations. I am truly proud to have spent time with Mr. Brams and will never forget the sacrifices he made for our society and his family.
Johanna, Fred, Jessica & Sarah (as well as David and his family) will be in my thoughts as they celebrate the enduring gift of his wisdom.
