Janice Kay Baty, daughter of Harry and Martha (Gorton) Baty, was born on May 16, 1951, in Lake City, Iowa. She graduated from Lake City High School with the Class of 1969.

She was united in marriage to Joe Van Dodson in 1978. Together, they made their home in Dayton, where they adopted Nick and Katie. Janice and Joe later divorced in 2008.

Jan worked for many years as a Teacher’s Associate at Southeast Webster Grand School and at Grandview Care Center. She also loved volunteering at The Key and Village General Store in Fort Dodge, where she was admired for her patience, compassion, and care for those around her.

Janice enjoyed various crafts, but above all, her family was her greatest joy. She especially cherished time spent visiting her grandsons, Kaiden, Greyson, and Elijah.

In addition to her parents, Jan was preceded in death by her daughter in infancy, Melissa Dodson; her son, Nick Dodson; her brother in infancy, Milo Baty; her sister, Joy Lewis; her former husband, Joe Dodson; and her nephew, Chase Dodson.

She is survived by her daughter, Katie Jo (Matthew) Pierce of Phoenix, Arizona; three beloved grandsons, Kaiden, Greyson, and Elijah Pierce; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.

Jan will be remembered for her kind heart, quiet strength, and unwavering love for her family.
