Jean Smathers (O’Brien), age 72, passed away Thursday, October 30th, 2025 after a courageous fight against cancer.
Jean was born on February 11th, 1953 to James and Carrie McElhatton of Whitehall, Ohio.
Jean worked for Walmart leading into her retirement, but previously was a wife, mother, and a friend to everyone she met. She loved to grow a garden and tend to many of her colorful flowers as well as spending time at her local thrift stores.
Jean was preceded in death by her husbands, Brian O’Brien and Donald Smathers. She was survived by Richard Weise as well as her sons, Carl O’Brien (Maggie) and Brian O’Brien (Casey). Her grandchildren Sierra, Declan, Brenden, Collin, Eileen, Brody Wyatt, Breanna, and her great-grandson, Justin.
Immediate family will greet friends and family from 1pm to 3pm, Sunday, November 9, 2025 at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals, and Receptions - Northeast, 3047 E. Dublin-Granville Road, Columbus, Ohio 43231. A service to honor Jean's life will be held at 3pm, on Sunday, November 9, 2025 at Newcomer Northeast.
