James Tierney Obituary

Published by News & Messenger from Nov. 9 to Nov. 10, 2010.
James Michael Tierney James Michael Tierney was born in Portsmouth, Va. May 10, 1955 to parents Marion Parker Tierney and John F. Tierney, Jr. Michael lived in Virginia the majority of his life and graduated from Kempsville H.S. in Virginia Beach and then Virginia Tech in Blacksburg Va. with a B.A. degree in 1978.

Mike loved Nags Head N.C. and spent time there each year with family and friends. He was a passionate fisherman and spent countless hours fishing on the beach, piers, and offshore out of the Oregon Inlet Fishing Center. He also loved his Washington Redskins, New York Yankees, and his Virginia Tech Hokies. Most of all he loved his daughter Michal and wife Cindy of Woodbridge, Va.

Many will remember Michael as a generous and forthright man who loved to laugh, and enjoyed a good party with friends and family. Christmas was always a big time at his home and he won awards for his Christmas light decorations. He was also a dog lover and lost his "best friends" Zeke and Misty earlier.

Preceded in death by his mother Marion Tierney, Michael is survived by his daughter Michal and wife Cindy of Woodbridge, Va., father John (Jake) Tierney Jr., formerly from Va., now in Cocoa beach, Fl., brother David Tierney, wife Jennifer of Woodbridge, Va., sister Kathy Tierney of Richmond, Va., brother John F. Tierney III, wife Carey of Jupiter, Fl, sister Sandy Dunlap, husband Dan of Cocoa Beach Fl., neice Amanda Tierney, nephews David Tierney Jr., Curt Redden, Aunt Patricia Tierney, uncle Bernard Tierney and many others from North Carolina to Colorado.

Perhaps Michael's greatest legacy is the love and laughter he shared with friends and family ,without judgment, and in its purest form.

Michael's life will be celebrated Thursday Nov. 11,2010 1:00 PM at St Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Triangle, VA. with a reception to follow.

Burial will be at Powell's Point Christian Church, N.C. Friday Nov. 12,2010 at 2:00PM.

I knew Mike for a long time. I don't think there was ever a time we got together--ever--when we didn't end up laughing about something. He was just one of those guys who was easy to be around. We shared LOTS of good times. Cindy and Michal, I am so sorry for your loss. Mike was a good guy.

Dear Tierney Family,

We had just spoken to Mike about 3 weeks ago and it was great to catch up with him. He spoke of his love for Cindy and Michal, and how very proud he was of his beautiful, amazing daughter.

Please accept our deepest sympathy and know that you were the very center of Mike's universe. Bob and I will miss Mike's laugh and will always be grateful that he introduced the two of us.

You are in our thoughts and prayers,

Patty and Bob Breland
