Florence Hughes Thompson

Florence Jeannette Hughes Thompson, 88, of Nellysford, died on Wednesday, November 10, 2010, at Envoy of Staunton.

She was born in Nelson County on October 27, 1922, a daughter of the late William M. Hughes Sr. and Gracie Virginia Fitzgerald Hughes.

Florence was a wonderful mother, a beloved grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a kind and caring member of her community, often calling and checking on one or more of her neighbors and friends. She played an active role at the Rockfish Senior Center and was a member of Wintergreen Christian Church.

She is survived by a son, William "Gale" Thompson and Linda of Beech Grove; a daughter, Sue Lawhorne and Joe of Nellysford; two brothers, Massie E. Hughes and Joyce of Afton and David R. Hughes of Waynesboro; two sisters, Elizabeth Woodson of Nellysford and Gladys Herring and Kenny of Afton; grandchildren, Jonathan Thompson and Cindy and their son, Roman, Dana Hughes and Robb, Christina White and Mike and their children, Chelsey, Michael and Misten, Teri Campbell and her daughter, Tamora, Tommy Lawhorne and Stacy and their children, Katlyn, Liberty and Mason, and Kenny Lawhorne and Shelia and their children, Jackson and Graceann.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John William Thompson; two brothers, William Murckley Hughes and Lewis Hughes; sisters, Pocahontas Newberry and Minnie Truslow; and two infant sisters.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the nursing staff at Envoy of Staunton and Southern Care Hospice for all their loving care and kindness shown to their loved one, and to niece, Joan Fox and sister, Gladys Herring for all their love and support.

Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, November 13, 2010, at Beech Grove Christian Church by the Reverend Michael Auen and Mr. Robert Mansfield, with burial to follow at Rockfish Valley Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Friday, November 12, 2010, at Byrum-Parr Funeral Home.

The family requests that memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice in Florence's memory.

We deeply regret the passing of a very loving and special person. Our heart-felt sympathy and prayers are with the family. Jeannette is now resting in eternal peace with her Lord and Savior.

Mrs. Thompson was my brother's mother- in-law and best friends with our mother. She cared and asked about the entire family whenever she saw one or the other. She was a person who loved everyone. Claudia Tuggle (Lynchburg, VA)

Mrs. Thompson was the grandmother of my husbands brother and was very kind and welcoming to everyone she knew. She will be greatly missed but always loved. Joey and I send our love to all of her loved ones.
