Jerrold Cyron 'Jerry' Spooner, 85, of Waynesboro, died on Monday, April 12, 2010, at Augusta Health in Fishersville.

He was born on January 28, 1925, in Detroit, Michigan, a son of Cyron John and Nellie Evans Robinson Spooner.

He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, serving as an Elder, Clerk of Session, and member of the choir. During World War II he served in the Army Air Corps in the Pacific Theater as a Command Gunner on a B-29.

In 1950, he received his BS in Physics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, joining General Electric as an engineer, retiring in 1986. Always active in the community, Jerry sang in choirs wherever he lived, including the SPEBSQSA, Shenandoah Valley and Staunton Choral Societies, and Schola Cantorum. He also enjoyed the theater both on stage and behind the scenes with the Waynesboro Players and Oak Grove Players. Other civic activities included the Shenandoah Art Center, Community Concerts, Waynesboro Cultural Commission, and the Wayne Theater Alliance.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy C. Spooner; a daughter, Cheryl Jean Spooner; a granddaughter, Jessica Cheryl Spooner; and a sister, Florence Louise Coton.

Surviving are two daughters, Leslie Ann Bennett of Tahlequah, Oklahoma, and Jerri Lynn Lindsay of Fredericksburg; two sons, Thomas Alan Spooner of Greer, South Carolina, and Jeffrey William Spooner of Gateville, Texas; a brother-in-law, Harry Painter Coton Jr.; nine grandchildren, Victoria Lynn Brown, Douglas Steven Sanders, Mathew Lee Sanders, Nicole Marie Patrick, Arianna Dorothy Garland, Kimberly Margaret Spooner, Katharine Olivia Spooner, Kayla Rachel Spooner, and Kristen Cheryl Spooner; and four great-grandchildren, Carson Ian Brown, Gavin Cyron Brown, Ellianna Ilene Sanders, and Michael Steven Przpeora; one niece,Terry Lee Schell, and one nephew, William Harry Coton.

A memorial service will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday, April 15, 2010, at Westminster Presbyterian Church by Dr. Jon Lovelady. A private burial will be held earlier with honors conducted by the Stuarts Draft VFW Post #9339.

The family will receive friends from 7 until 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 14, 2010, at McDow Funeral Home.
