Dr. Sydney J. Nix Jr., 90, of Westminster Towers, passed away on Friday, October 1, 2010, at Westminster Health Care in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

Sydney was born in Athens, Georgia, on March 8, 1920, and spent most of his youth in Sanford, Florida. He was the son of the late Sydney J. Nix Sr. and the late Lottie Appleby Nix.

Sydney graduated from Stetson University in 1942. Then during World War II, he proudly served in the United States Navy as the Communication Officer aboard the minesweeper, USS Rebel, in the Pacific. Following the war, he attended Indiana University where he earned a PhD in Organic Chemistry in 1950. He then pursed his career with the DuPont Company as a research chemist at Benger Lab in Waynesboro, Virginia, where he worked on textile fibers for more than 30 years. After retiring from DuPont in 1984 and living in Waynesboro for fifty years, Sydney and his wife Florence moved to Meridian, Mississippi where they lived for nine years. In July, 2010 they moved to Westminster Towers in Rock Hill.

Sydney is survived by his wife of 64 year marriage, Florence Price Nix; his sons, Ray Price Nix and his wife, Trudy, of Houston, Texas, and Doctor David Sydney Nix and his wife, Deneane, of Rock Hill; and his four grandchildren, Andrew Nix, Jennifer Nix, Alexander Nix, and Elena Nix.

A private graveside service for Sydney will be held at the Forest Hills Cemetery in Rock Hill on Saturday, October 9, 2010.

A memorial service celebrating Sydney's life will follow at 2 p.m. at the Hospice and Community Care Chapel, 2275 India Hook Road, Rock Hill, South Carolina. The family will receive friends after the memorial service.
