I was just reminiscing about Mrs. Lane over the holidays- she had a profound impact on me as her student. I wanted to check on how she was doing and, unfortunately, I came across her obituary :(. I am very sad to hear the news, and while it might be a bit late, my heart is with your family.
She was an excellent educator- the fact I remember the 5th grade and all of her lessons are just one more testament to how much of an amazing teacher she was.
I'm sad I only learned about her passing now, but I want her family and friends to know how much she impacted me personally by inspiring me to pursue more than I ever thought I might be able to achieve (and so many more of us in her classes, I'm sure).
As an aside, I remember her explaining her diabetes and why she needed snacks throughout the day... later, at 14, I was diagnosed with diabetes. I appreciate her dialagoue with us as young students regarding the disease more than she could ever know.
By letting us know it was something that needed special attention and not making a big deal about it in itself, it encouraged me to explain the disease to my peers and future teachers and not be ashamed of my injections, finger pricks, and random candy needs! ...not always the easiest feat for a young newly diabetic teenage girl.
She also had to put up with a lot- 5th graders are some of the hardest bunch. We certainly weren't the easiet to deal with! She had a heart of gold to put up with our shenanigans on a daily basis! I think we *may* or *may not* have had an actual food fight on a picnic day ;). I can't even imagine the conversations with our parents!
All in all, she was amazing. I remember her very fondly, and I wish your family the warmest wishes.

I'm so sorry to hear this. I had Mrs Lane as a 5th grade teacher back in the 80's, and still to this day thought of her often and how she touched my life. She was a great teacher and a wonderful person. I will never forget her. My condolences to her family and friends.
