Doris Ferko Obituary

DORIS MAE FERKO FORMERLY OF LANSING, IL Doris Mae Ferko, age 89, formerly of Lansing, IL, passed away on Tuesday, March 22, 2011. She was born on August 22, 1921 in Antigo, WI to Joseph and Josephine Walter. She was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband of 40 years, George Ferko, Jr.; and her brother, Robert Walter. Doris was the loving mother of Joann (John) Gorrell of Fayetteville, GA, Janet (Bill) Carey of Pompano Beach, FL, and George (Jane) Ferko of Lansing, IL; grandmother to Elizabeth Parker, Janet Gorrell, Erin and Megan Carey, Shannon, Kaitlin, and Alexandra Ferko; and great-grandmother to Aidan, Reese and Jacob. Doris graduated from George Rogers Clark High School in Hammond in 1940. During WWII, she worked at Pullman- Standard, resigning to raise her family. She returned to a career in the hospitality industry, working until age 87. Doris was a longtime volunteer at the St. Joseph Soup Kitchen. She was a lifelong reader and animal lover. Memorial services will be held Wednesday, March 30, 2011 at Assumption Cemetery, 19500 S Cottage Grove Ave., Glenwood, IL at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Guiding Eyes for the Blind, 611 Granite Springs Road, Yorktown Heights, NY 10598. www.guidingeyes.org

Gram, I miss you so much. I never thought you would ever leave and now that you're gone I wish even more that I could hug you again and again. I wish that you were still alive to hear me tell you that I got into nursing school. I would have loved to hear the joy in your voice. I miss you and love you dearly.
