Ferdinand SCHOETTLE Obituary

SCHOETTLE--Ferdinand Paul, Jr. Ferdinand P. Schoettle (Andy) died November 24 in Vero Beach, Florida from cancer. He was the son of Louise White Schoettle of Villanova and Ferdinand P. Schoettle of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Professionally, Andy was a nationally recognized scholar of federal and state tax law and policy. He received his A.B. degree from Princeton University. He received his LL.B. degree with high honors and his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in economics from Harvard University. During law school, he was an Editor of the Harvard Law Review. After graduating from law school, Andy clerked for Judge Learned Hand of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. He then worked for the United States Treasury Department in the Office of Tax Legislation Counsel and for Senator Joseph Clark. From 1963 to 1966, he practiced law at Morgan, Lewis & Bockius in Philadelphia. He joined the University of Minnesota Law School faculty in 1967. As a professor of law, he taught courses in state and local taxation, federal taxation, law and public policy (including tax policy), and economics for lawyers. He was a Guest Scholar at the Brookings Institute, Visiting Professor at Uppsala University in Sweden and a visiting scholar at Harvard Law School. He formally retired from teaching in 2008. Andy's passion in his life was sailing. Over his sailing career, Andy owned and raced a variety of boats including J boats, Scows, Lasers and Finns. He began sailing in Mantoloking, New Jersey on Barnegat Bay, and he raced on the East Coast, in the Mid West, and in Europe, winning or placing in top positions in many regattas. He skippered a 5.5M in the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne, Australia finishing fourth and was on the United States Olympic team in the 1960 Olympics in Naples, Italy. He was inducted into the Barnegat Bay Hall of Fame this past summer. Outside of sailing, Andy had a love for the outdoors. He spent a great deal of time in the mountains around Jackson Hole, Wyoming. He loved to hike, ride horseback and fly-fish on the Snake River. Andy is survived by his two sons, Michael and Derek Schoettle, a daughter, Katherine Long, six grandchildren, and four siblings - Michael B. Schoettle, Joan Carville, Polly Miller, and Lucile Ford. There will be a Memorial Service in remembrance of Andy's life this June in Mantoloking, New Jersey. Donations are being accepted in his name to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Boston, MA.

Uncle Andy, I miss you dearly. You taught me about the focused way you approached sailing and all things. I was happy for the free advice you often gave..I love you, only wish I'd known you better.

My deepest condolences. I was honored to have worked with Andy while he was at GMU Law. Any time that I saw Andy and Berkie coming down the hall, I knew it was going to be a good day.

To Andy,
Thank you for your confidence in me while crewing for you in the "C's" in Minnesota during the eighties. You demonstrated to me the finest example of gracious sportsmanship and humble expertice on the water and land.
Derek, I remember we crewed with your Dad one summer race weekend.
Your company on the Birkibiner ski races cheered me during the long slogs and slow tracks.
My best wishes are for you and your family and they are shared by all at the U of MN law School.
I will always think of you on a cat running with a following breeze, past Thomas Point Shoal light, then Tilghman, soon Point No Point on starboard, through the Wolftrap and on to slip out into the great blue forever.
I'll see you there Andy.

I knew Andy as a Classmate at Princeton. Our paths would glowingly cross at Reunions. Andy was an adornment of our Class. Mike Robbins '55

I wouldn't be here if “uncle” Andy hadn't asked my mother to sail him across Marblehead harbor in her sailing dinghy, noted that she was “not such a little girl after all”, and invited her to join him and his Olympic crew for dinner at the Boston Yacht Club, and sent my Dad to go pick her up. I guess the hot-shot sailor (even in his 70's doing showy tricks racing Lasers), transformed his gusto into what are sure to be whimsical and formidable gusts of wind on a racecourse, annoyingly before I got to say good bye or sail with him again.
