PHILIP WOLFE Obituary
Mathematician, died on December 29 after a brief illness. Born in California in 1927, he earned his Ph.D. in Mathematics at the University of California at Berkeley, and went on to become one of the founding fathers of the field of optimization, the mathematics that underlies modern operations research. He is survived by his wife, Hallie Flanagan Wolfe, his daughter Sarah of Whitehorse, Canada, and grandchildren Duncan and Sidney. Phil was known for his kindness to younger researchers and for clear and interesting lectures. He and Hallie have lived in Ossining, New York for the past 48 years.

Thanks for the guidance that led many of us to ensure that the algorithms we developed actually worked on computers rather than just in theory. (I especially enjoyed the 'anonymous' tongue in cheek article in Math. Progr. )

Phil was a great friend and a wonderful person.
I first met him in the summer of 1960 when I worked with im at the Rand Corp in Santa Monica. Subsequently, we saw each other here and there, at professional meetings and at home, and worked together in starting up the journal Mathematical Programming and what has become the Mathematical Optimization Society. He was a excellent mathematician and an exceptional expositor. But, most of all, he was a fine human being. The memory of him will always remain vivid.
