Thanks for the guidance that led many of us to ensure that the algorithms we developed actually worked on computers rather than just in theory. (I especially enjoyed the 'anonymous' tongue in cheek article in Math. Progr. )

Phil was a great friend and a wonderful person.
I first met him in the summer of 1960 when I worked with im at the Rand Corp in Santa Monica. Subsequently, we saw each other here and there, at professional meetings and at home, and worked together in starting up the journal Mathematical Programming and what has become the Mathematical Optimization Society. He was a excellent mathematician and an exceptional expositor. But, most of all, he was a fine human being. The memory of him will always remain vivid.

It was my honor and privilege to interview Phil in 2001. He was a great storyteller and mathematician. https://www.informs.org/About-INFORMS/History-and-Traditions/Biographical-Profiles/Wolfe-Philip#oral_hist
