To the Smith Family,
It's Thanksgiving night and I got a call from a old friend for the holiday, and in talking he told me about Bobby's passing, it broke me heart that I did not not know. I was lucky enough to be at the 3rd dist. when Bobby came to our department, and knew right away this is a guy that was special. I got to work with the likes of Bobby, along with Jimmy, Cookie and Marty Long who are also gone too soon along with many great cops who are no longer with us. Bobby was in my eyes what I always wanted to be, a perfect cop, a great guy and in over the past thirty, forty years I would run in to him our conversation was always about our family, kids, college and that they were the reason why we were in the job so long, he was a family man and always loyal to this city and his family, I am sad not to be able to look for Bobby in that traffic jeep and to say "when you getting out this gig". Your family and Bobby are in by thoughts. Marty Coggins

Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal. The members of our CopNET family would like to thank Robert J. Smith for his dedication and service to the citizens of Philadelphia. The passing of Bob will be broadcast to our 3,404 members shortly and we would like to extend our sincere condolences to his family. His absence from our ranks will be deeply missed by the remaining members of Philadelphia's Finest who were fortunate to have served with him during his police career. “Perhaps they are not stars, but rather openings in heaven where the love of our lost ones pours through and shines down upon us to let us know they are happy.”

There are no words to express my sorrow for everyone who knew & loved Mr. Smith, our beloved Bobby.

I cannot imagine the heaviness on your hearts, but I do know the memories & happiness he left on our souls.

Thinking of you Dana, Theresa and everyone touched by Bobby in their lifetime. What a mark he has left, and will continue to leave, on us all.

RIP Brother, I will never forget my first night on the job and i get to work with you. Nervous already and the Sergeant tells me i have you working with the best cop in the district tonight. We get into the vehicle and you were like listen brother, I know your nervous with this being your first night on the job but it could be alot worse you could be working with a bum but the Lt. wants you with someone that wants to do the JOB. I only ask you one thing and thats to keep your eyes and ears open, Know what street were on and don't answer the dam radio and say something stupid on it! Lord please hear my prayer and take good care of this man for he has served this city with honor and deserves to rest in peace. My prayers are with you Bobby and your Family. God Bless you Brother
