I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Master Hampton (Po Yen) as I remembered him back in the early 1980s during my Tong Leong Gwo Shuh Goan days. I trained in Boone, NC and would travel up to Maryland and PA to compete each year. I loved meeting Po Yen each time. He was an incredible martial artist. May you rest in peace, Po Yen. May God comfort you and your family.

My brother was in palliative care, he was blessed to have a preaching moment on radio out of North Carolina by phone. At the time I normally would not be able to get a station out of North Carolina. But this day on my way to Church GOD blessed. I cried all the way to Church. We had nicknames growing up and his was Butch. I called him to let him know that his big sister was so proud. Both of us were crying and all of a sudden, Butch said wait a minute wait a minute! Girl you´re messing up my reputation. We both broke out in laughter.
Thank you all for leaving comments. I read them over and over. Because I was the oldest, I operated in our household as a second mother. His passing is like my oldest child passed. What I will never ever forget, is him lifting his lifeless body up and kissed me on my lips. Just before he stopped speaking, he said that he carried me everywhere he went. He left me with such great memories. Rip in peace my beloved Butch.

I have fond memories from the early 1980s in Washington, DC training in Tong Leong Gwo Shu Gwon - of the way you set high expectations for your students, and how you led by example - ALWAYS winning in competitions. Nobody could hope for a better instructor. You were invincible and loved by all, whose hearts ache but are filled with happy memories.

Sifu Hampton, it brings saddness to my heart to hear of your passing from this world. While the time was brief that i had the priviledge of being a pupil of yours in the Haftford area it has been life lasting that with you taught me. I will always remember the high standard you set for yourself and expected from your pupils. I did achieve my black belt, and recently started training again for a second Black Belt. In all my training, and in what others see in me is in part a reflection of you and what you taught me. You will always be part of who I am. May I, one last time call you Poyen, o beloved teacher.

Every now and again you cross my mind just like today, I speak of you with another who trained under your wing and we smiled remembering your spirit. You are dearly missed and your presence is often felt. My only regret was not staying within your presence while you were with us and my children not having the honor of training with you. It's hard to want to return back to the art when you had someone as great as you to teach, there simply is no comparison. Love and Miss You!!

I first saw you training in Elizabeth Park around 1987 and thought you and your students were awesome but to much discipline for me. Then I met Mike Wilson around 1997 and he mentioned he was training with his Teacher in Charter Oak I then mentioned the man I saw ten years prior (that's how big of an impression you left, I didn't forget you over ten years)in the park. He said that's probably Master Hampton you should come check out the class so eventually I did. Sure enough it was you! Mike showed me some stances and I said to myself again way to much discipline for me. In 2003 Mike was nice enough to rent me a room and about a month later he said his teacher would be moving in would I mind helping him move? Not a problem...Little did I know that was the day my life would change forever.

Thinking about you everyday Pops. I still can't believe your gone. I look at your pictures everyday and talk to you hoping that you hear me and see your 3 grandsons growing and looking more like us everyday. You were my best friend. I just wish I could see you one last time. You were the bravest man I've ever known. Even on your last days you were strong when others would be weak. Master Hampton will always be remembered. I pass his picture every day in my home and tell my children about him. I am only sorry that I did not have more time to spend with him here on earth but I pray that we will one day meet again in the Kingdom of Heaven which is where I know he is now. I was so very blessed when God allowed me the privelege of meeting and becoming a brother with Mr. Hampton. I meet him in the hospital at Manchester. I was blessed to be assigned to care for him but he encouraged me and the entire 2 East floor. His room became a place where everyone knew Gods Spirit was present. I am so looking forward to eternity to meet Jesus and then Mr. Hampton. What a Man!! What a reflection of Jesus!! I only wish that I had met him much earlier. Words are so inadequate.

You taught more than just Martial Arts, you taught us how to appreciate, love and enjoy life to the fullest. You were many different people to me. I was a student of Master Hampton (Po Yen) in the early 80s when I was learning Teong Leong at GWU in DC, only 11 years old. He was larger than life for me, an incredible martial artist, amazing competitor and champion who I will never forget. I was very saddened to hear of his passing. His influence and presence had a huge impact on me as a young martial artist. His strength and discipline were traits I always aspired to emulate. I am honored to have known and trained under you.

Oh, how sad we were after hearing of the passing of Master Hampton. He was like a son, let alone the fact he looked like our side of the family, His smile,freckles and infectious laugh. Oh, how we will miss him during holiday dinners. He and his brothers in Connecticut would eat until they were silly and still have room for pound cake. God bless you all and may precious memories always linger.
