Max McKenzie Obituary

Max McKenzie Sr. LAKE WALES, Fla. - Max Wendell "Pop" McKenzie Sr., 75, of the 400 block of Caymen Drive, Lake Wales, Fla., passed away Thursday, Oct. 21, 2010 at the home of his son in Elizabeth City, N.C. Born in Kankakee, Ill., he was the son of the late Chester Brown McKenzie and the late Bernice Anne Flint McKenzie and the husband of Barbara Fisher McKenzie. Mr. McKenzie served the U.S. Navy for 20 years and retired as senior chief petty officer. He met and married Barbara in Hawaii in 1958. They retired in 1974 to Virginia Beach where he lived and worked for Green Run Homes Association for 20 years. He and Barbara retired to Florida in 2004. Besides his wife, Mr. McKenzie is survived by his four sons, Max W. McKenzie Jr. and wife Sherry of Elizabeth City, Michael W. McKenzie and wife Wanda of Suffolk, Mark W. McKenzie and wife Jill of Fruit Cove, Fla., and Matthew W. McKenzie and wife Kim of Virginia Beach; nine grandchildren, Heather (McKenzie) Tuttle and husband Rodney of Little Rock, Ark., Lauren McKenzie of Virginia Beach, Max W. McKenzie III and wife Brie of Spokane, Wash., Jennifer (McKenzie) Arrington and husband Matthew of Portsmouth, Sara (McKenzie) Winslow and husband Michael of Suffolk, Bryce McKenzie and Brett McKenzie of Fruit Cove, Melissa McKenzie and and Brendan Stickles of Virginia Beach; and six great- grandchildren. A celebration of life with military honors will be held Saturday, Oct. 30, at 2 p.m. at the home of Max and Sherry McKenzie, 112 Stedman Lane East, Elizabeth City, NC 27909. Casual attire please. There will be a cookout following the service. Twiford Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, is serving the McKenzie family. Life goes by so quickly. I think of Max very often and am thankful to have known him. Such a wonderful man and always did his best to lift us all up. His impact on so many lives was and is still felt daily. .......
