Guy Daugherty Obituary

Guy Edward Daugherty

Virginia Beach - Guy Edward Daugherty, born in Norfolk, VA, May 12, 1921, died Tuesday, November 24, 2015, in his home surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his wife Sherry, his son Guy E. "Boots" Daugherty Jr of Virginia Beach, and daughters Carol Moon of Virginia Beach, Loretta Doctor of San Diego, CA, Rita Filek of Nashville, TN, Claudia Bird of Midland, VA, and Eva Spicola of Dunedin, FL; plus ten grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. After attending Maury High School, Guy completed an apprenticeship at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and worked in the Design Loft. He was drafted into the U.S. Army to serve in WWII where he earned a battlefield commission to the rank of LT. He continued his service to his country in the USAR. Upon completion of his Army tour, he received degrees from the College of William & Mary and Harvard Law School. He practiced law in the city of Norfolk for 51 years, retiring in December 2007. During his practice, he served on the Harvard Law School Acceptance Committee, and on a committee comprised of lawyers and doctors determining the merit of medical malpractice lawsuits; plus he taught and mentored young lawyers throughout his career. Guy's avocational time was spent golfing, fishing, reading, and designing and building two homes. His children say he taught them how to live honest, healthy and self-respecting lives; that he was witty, down to earth, and young at heart; that he coached and mentored them; that he was understanding, forgiving, and always expressed his love for them. Guy made a difference in so many lives through his hard work and generosity.

Friends and family are invited to gather at Guy's home for a celebration of his life on Sunday, November 29, between 1-4 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association at curealz.org, or to Hospice Care at hospicenet.org. Online condolences can be made to the family at hdoliver.com.

Dear Sherry,

Most people remember Guy for being one of the best civil litigation lawyers in Virginia.

I remember him most for being an excellent builder, an adventurous fisherman, an avid golfer, a double black diamond skier, a winning doubles partner in tennis, a kind hearted mentor and a lifelong friend. He is still very much in our memories.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and the family, especially as we remember Guy on the day he went to heaven.

Love always,
Patrick Palanca

Dear Sherry,

As you well know, I loved Guy so very much. Guy was like an Uncle to me in my early years through his close friendship and partnership with my Dad.

Guy and my father shared their brilliant insights of law with each other as well as their innate Irish and Welsh sense of humor.
As a little girl, I remember them always laughing together radiating the room with joy.

Perhaps Guy will meet up with his old friend Henry to laugh once again. I pray they watch over all of us through their wise and powerful spirits.

Guy knew how blessed and lucky he was to have you as his wife and best friend, he would always mention you and his beautiful extended family every time I saw him.

Please know you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers always.
