Mark Poehls Obituary

POEHLS, Mark "Logger"

Mark "Logger" Poehls

Mark left us on Tuesday, May 20, 2014. The mighty limb of an old oak sent our beloved logger home to the Lord. Mark was 56 years old, an extraordinary 112 in "logger years."

Born February 23, 1958 to Walter and Dolores (Schleis) Poehls of Algoma, Mark grew up in St. Paul, Minnesota where he developed life-long friendships. He moved with his family to Freedom, Wisconsin where he attended high school and worked on area farms, strengthening himself for track and football, a game he greatly enjoyed to the end.

Mark is survived by the love of his life, Lori (Flanigan) Poehls, whom he married on July 12, 1980. Together they raised five wonderful sons. She shared his hopes, his fears, his dreams, and his love.

Mark began logging at 27 years young and quickly grew herculean in stature and reputation. He started Poehls & Sons Logging and worked himself ruthlessly. His incredible work ethic and efficiency grew legendary. He literally did the work of an entire crew of men by himself. He encouraged in his sons this ethic, included them in his work, and intensely watched over them. The wood yard in Mackville where he built "the shop" was his cabin in the woods—his retreat for the meditative work that held for him great meaning. His legacy will carry on through his five sons: Brian (Katie) Poehls, Karl (Carrie) Poehls, Taylor (Lydia) Poehls, Justus (Laura) Poehls, and Beau Poehls.

Mark exuded a fierce passion for life. He valued family, friends, honesty, hard work, and simplicity. His consideration for others was obvious, and it always reflected originality and depth of thought. He would not be spoon fed any idea or notion. He sought no recognition for the compassion he offered.

Mark knew how to tell a story. He entertained friends and family for long hours with oft-retold tales of hardship and humor. He captivated. His sons would sneak out of their rooms late at night to sit at the end of the hallway just to listen to him speak.

Mark delighted in his grandchildren's visits, making sure to always have their favorite "fire gum" on hand. His grandchildren loved their "big grandpa," loved the bear of a man who growled and chased them through the house and around the yard. He was a gentle giant to his eleven grandchildren: Tristan, Henry, Samuel, Talson, Adler, Japhy, Elsa, Aidan, Jude, Elijah and Ramona.

Mark cherished travelling with Lori, especially to warmer climates during the cold Wisconsin winters, so many of which he spent beating his frozen fingers to regain enough feeling in them to keep working.

He is further survived by his saintly mother: Dolores Poehls; his supportive brothers and their kind wives: Paul (Terri) Poehls, Will (Patti) Poehls, Patrick (Christine) Poehls, Brian Poehls; his loving sisters and their husbands: Char (Tony) Rondinelli and Mary (John) Graycarek; his loving sisters and their husbands: Char (Tony) Rondinelli and Mary (John) Graycarek; and his brother-in-law: David (Jackie) Flanigan." Mark was preceded in death by his beloved brother Jerome, whose tragic death weighed on him always; by his highly influential father Walter; and his mother and father-in-law, Don and Virginia Flanigan.

Memorial services for Mark will be held on Wednesday, May 28, 2014, 11:30 AM at St. Bernard Catholic Church, Appleton with Father Dennis Ryan officiating. Family and friends will be received on WEDNESDAY AT THE CHURCH from 9:30am until the hour of service.

We saw Mark every fall for the last 15 years when he would deliver our family's winter supply of firewood. We'd always arrange the delivery for the end of the day, so my wife and I could enjoy a beer or two with Mark on the back deck. We will miss his ready smile and philosophical musings on life and the world.

Our sympathies for your family's loss.

Dear Poehls family,
I am very sorry to hear of your loss. I will be keeping Mark and all of you in my prayers. It's very sad to lose someone in your life but to lose them so young in life has more of a sting to it. It sounds as thought Mark lived life to it's fullest and loved greatly, sounds like a very rich man to me.

I was saddened to read in the paper of Mark's tragic end. For the past dozen years or so I have been one of Mark's customers. Though I would only see him once a year when he made his delivery, I looked forward to chatting with him. Mark impressed me with his integrity and honesty. So very sorry for your loss and please know that you are in my prayers.

I remember Mark and Lori paddling off onto Washington Lake at Don and Ginny's cottage, probably not too long after they first met. Since that time, I never, EVER saw them together without seeing two people completely in love with one another.

There are passings we anticipate and prepare for. Others that just leave us stunned. Like this.

My deepest, deepest sympathies to Lori and the boys, to Mark's Mom, and to everyone else whose hearts are broken.

I am saddened to hear of Mark's passing and my thoughts are with his family. Being in the tree business, I've known him for 8-10 years and worked with him on 6-8 jobs.
his work ethic was amazing and he wasa gentle giant..simply a fun guy to be around and work with. I hung up my saw last year and chatted with him about closing shop. He mentioned the physical toll logging takes and was thinking about hanging it up. Mark was a true friend. Again, my thoughts and prayers go out to your family.

I too met Mark when he transferred to Freedom. Although an "outsider" , he quickly became a friend to all. I can honestly say I do not recall a single classmate who did not like him. I have not seen Mark since I entered the service that summer after graduation, but was deeply saddened to hear of his passing nevertheless. I believe that to be a testament to his charm and sweet nature. My sympathy to his wife and family, as well as Will and Char.

Brian, I am so sorry....online hugs to you!

Mark was my neighbor and my friend. We met 20 years ago when he and Lori purchased a lot form us and moved in to their remodeled house. Mark has always be so helpful and kind to me and my family. He was his own man. He worked so hard to support his family while living a very modest life for himself. Mark was a gentle giant and had a heart of gold. He never said no when help was needed. I will miss him dearly and think of him often. Mark you can put the saws away. Your work is done and now it's Miller Time! May God's love be with you and your family always. Love, your dear friend Jim.
