Richard Brawner Obituary

Richard R Brawner, 82 of 2332 Liberty Drive, Coralville died from complications of cancer Saturday February 7th, 2009 at Windmill Manor. Memorial services will be at 3:00 P.M. Friday, February 13th at Zion Lutheran Church in Iowa City, with Pastor Mark Pries officiating. Visitation will be from 2:30 to 3:00 P.M. Friday at the church. Private burial will take place at Memory Gardens, with Military Rites provided by the Coralville American Legion. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Zion Lutheran Church or U. of Iowa Foundation in Richard's name.
Richard was born on February 7, 1927 in Iowa City to Clarence P. and May L. (Snider) Brawner. Richard graduated from Iowa City High School and attended the University of Iowa. Just prior to completing his B.A. degree, Richard was called into the service as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He trained as a heavy artillery specialist and served one year in Korea. Upon his discharge from the military Richard moved to New York and was employed at IBM. Richard became a computer program designer, assigned to the Texaco account. When Texaco moved their corporate headquarters to Houston, Richard was requested to move to Texas and continue as an IBM employee assigned to Texaco. After a few years in Texas, Richard left IBM and was hired by the city of Houston to develop their computer system. Richard received an award from the city of Houston for establishing this system. Within the last several years Richard returned to Iowa City to be with family. He loved dogs and his latest was a Pekingese named Oscar, a constant companion for 11 years. Richard was a lifetime member of the VFW and an avid Hawkeye fan.
Richard is survived by his two brothers: Harold Brawner of Iowa City and Gene (Ann) Brawner of Iowa City, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister-in-law Virginia Brawner.
