Dr. Harold L. Hammond, 82

Dr. Harold Hammond, 82, died Saturday, June 11, at his home in Coralville, Iowa. A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date. Harold was born in Hillsboro, Illinois on March 18, 1934 to Harold Thomas Hammond & Lillian Carlson Hammond. He graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1952.

Harold completed undergraduate studies at Milliken University, Decatur, Illinois and Roosevelt University in Chicago, Illinois. He earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery from Loyola University in 1962. He continued post-doctoral studies and residency, receiving a Master of Science degree in Pathology from the University of Chicago in 1967.

Harold continued his long and successful career in oral pathology, teaching and conducting research, at The University of Iowa Dental School from 1967 until his retirement in 2004. During his long career, he earned a reputation as one of the top oral pathologists in the world. At the time of his death, he held the title of Professor Emeritus, Oral Pathology, Radiology and Medicine and Director Emeritus, Surgical Oral Pathology at The University of Iowa.

Harold is survived by his wife, Pat J. Palmer, his daughter Connie Hammond Saunders (Steve Saunders) of Washington, D.C., a sister Martha Hammond (Marty Kissane) of Cookeville, Tennessee, three grandchildren, Heather Saunders Fox (Alex) Omaha, Nebraska, Jeffrey Joseph Saunders, Minneapolis, MN, and Katherine Saunders Grohs, (Todd), Sioux City, Iowa. He is also survived by three great-grandchildren, Makenzie Fox, Ethan Fox and Jasper Grohs.

Harold was preceded in death by his first wife, Sharon Bunton Hammond, his sister, Carol Jean Hammond, his parents, and his stepmother Charlotte Ames Hammond.
