Leo Becnel Obituary

Leo John Becnel, OD died September 17, 2010 while working on our Becnel Family Vineyards, the place he loved most. That fateful day changed our lives forever. We lost our dad, our grandpa, our uncle, our partner, our mentor and our friend. He loved us more than we often deserved and made it clear that we were what mattered most to him. He gave us unconditional love. A founding member of North Coast Bank, a lifetime Lion's Club member along with a host of other service and professional organizations, his involvement in the community was a natural extension of his optometry practice. He sincerely cared for his patients as people and was proud to care for generations of the same family. Dr. Leo John Becnel, Jr. was born March 10, 1937 in Franklin, Louisiana, the son of Leo John Becnel, Sr. and Ruth Mary Boudreaux Becnel. The list of lives he directly affected is long. Two proud children and their families: son Kevin Becnel and his wife Alena, their children Alena Ruth, Kassian, Leila and Darian; daughter Jennifer Becnel Hamelburg and her husband David, their children Ava and Sara; sister Rosemary Becnel Funk; loving long time companion Mari-Ann Gibbs Rivers and her daughter Aimée; forever family member Dora Becnel Hester and a long list of nieces and nephews he loved as if they were children of his own. A public celebration of his life is planned for Saturday, October 23rd at 2:00 p.m. at the Windsor Medical Center, 911 Medical Center Plaza in Windsor. In lieu of gifts, please send charitable donations to Cali Calmecac Language Academy, 9491 Starr Road, Windsor, CA 95492 with checks made payable to Cali PTA and Leo Becnel Memorial Fund on the memo line.

Thank you to everyone who supported my family after our tremendous loss. Dr. Becnel was a great optometrist and nobody will ever be able to replace him! Leo John Becnel, you will always be in our thoughts. Keep watching over us, like you have done for over a year. Love, your granddaughter.

Dear Becnel Family: A year ago I was a patient sent to get eye exam AND glasses by The Lions Club of Windsor. Dr. Becnel knew that I was not a "paying patient" but he still treated me with utmost respect and dignity, for that I will always be grateful.
May God comfort you in your loss.

I just heard about Leo. I am truly sorry. I have often expressed how I viewed Leo as a dynamo of energy. The world suffers his loss, and so do I. His passing, so unexpected, is confirmation of how transient our lives are. I am reminded of that portion of the church's liturgy in the requiem mass which addresses the brevity of life. It gives me resolve to try harder to express my love and concern, more frequently and often to those who are close to me. A loss so near is despairingly painful and it is preciously thin for me to encourage you with the admonition that this too will pass. But you know, as I do, that it will. Understand that there are many who love you dearly, and I am one of those. Please accept my condolences with the spirit in which it is tendered. It was with profound sadness that I heard about Leo's accident and death. While we did not have much contact during our mature years we were very close during high school. We double dated often (he with Wilda or Carolyn and I with Marilyn). We competed academically (he was valedictorian and I was salutatorian. In football he was right tackle and I was left tackle. I was going to be the optometrist not Leo. I changed my mind and when he returned to LSU from his year at Notre Dame He asked for and I gave him all my printed materials and applications from the University of Houston's school of optometry. He became the eye doctor and I became the academic. So many memories of the 50's. Leo was a good friend, and a kind and good man. I was lucky to have had him as a friend. Charles Ray Comeaux

Dearest Kevin and Jennifer,
I certainly have fond memories of time spent with your dad. I enjoyed his sense of humor. I drank my first Grolsch with him - with a true Louisiana feast - complete with newspaper covering the table and delicious seafood up at your house on Alta Vista.
I am sorry for your loss. May happy memories help you through difficult times.
I know how much he loved his Healdsburg ranch, and I am happy that he was able to see his dream come true.
Sincerely, Julia (Musso) Bowles

Fond memories of Leo will always bring a smile to my lips and my mind. As a friend of Mari-Ann's, he dubbed me as the "calm one" many years ago.

My thoughts and prayers are with you all. I will remember him always as a friend, a lover of grapes, and one who had a love affair with vernal ponds. He is a man who made the world a better place.

May you find joy and peace in his memories.
