John Stewart Obituary

Mr. John Calvin "Poo" Stewart departed this life suddenly on Monday, Aug. 15, 2011, at Chippenham Medical Center, Richmond, Va. He was born March 6, 1938, in Dinwiddie County, Va. He was the only child of the late Helen Cobb Stewart and John Alfred Stewart.

John attended Dinwiddie County Public Schools and was a member of the first graduating

class of Southside High School in 1957. As a high school student, he was an outstanding basketball player. He was a graduate of Virginia State College, earning a degree in Agricultural Education in 1961. John also joined the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. at VSC. He earned a Master's degree in Administration and Supervision and had earned 30 hours towards a doctoral degree from the same institution.

He began his teaching career at Lunenburg High School, Victoria, Va., 1961-1965. From

there he matriculated to his high school alma mater as a teacher of Agriculture Education beginning in 1965. He continued his teaching career at the Dinwiddie County Senior High School advancing to assistant principal and returned to the former Southside High School in 1984 as the principal of Dinwiddie County Junior High School. He led the transition for the development of the current Dinwiddie County Middle School, from which he retired in 1991. He also served as the president of the

Dinwiddie County Education Association, a member of both the Virginia Education Association and the National Education Association. John was also a member of many other organizations.

John began his Christian journey at Center Star Baptist Church, Dinwiddie, where he was baptized and worshipped there until transferring his membership to the Olive Branch Baptist Church in Dinwiddie. At Olive Branch, he was active in the music ministry — The Male Ensemble, T A Lacy Choir and the Senior Choir (now Mass Choir) and the Fellowship Choir. He was also a devoted attendee of the daytime Bible study class.

In 1979 he was a candidate for the Dinwiddie County Board of Supervisors. He served as the secretary of the Dinwiddie County Electoral Board for over 20 years. He was a member of the Benedict Civic Club, Petersburg, Va., serving as president for numerous terms and many other capacities. He was an avid gardener who loved to share his many vegetables and fruits with family and friends in the community and other areas. He had a super green thumb and freely shared his knowledge with others. John had a passion for fishing, both freshwater and saltwater. He was an excellent cook and wooed many with his fried ribs and greens at the annual Christian tailgate celebration at OBBC.

He leaves to cherish his memories, his wife of 44 years, Mrs. Lillian Stewart; four daughters, Gwendolyn Williamson and Tracy Stewart of Baltimore, Md., Dawn Stewart of San Diego, Calif., and Lisa Campbell of Sutherland, Va.; one son, General A.J. Stewart of Randolph Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas; one daughter-in-law, Areetha Stewart; one son-in-law, Glen Campbell, Sutherland, Va.; 12 grandchildren, Brandon, Troy, Joshua, Matthew, Kalota, Brian, John Calvin II, Jason, George, Adrien, Alexis and Daniel; seven great-grandchildren, Brianna, Taylor, Layla, Kimora, Brandon, Kylan, and Riyan; former wife, Sandra Brown Stewart of Baltimore, Md; one devoted uncle, James L.

Steward (Faye) of Sutherland; three loving aunts, Ida B. Morgan of Dinwiddie, Doris Bundy of Dewitt and Margaret Steward of Philadelphia, Pa.; and a host of other relatives.

He touched many, many lives and instilled positive values of honesty, teamwork and fair play with students and adults. His sense of humor was apparent to everyone he encountered. John epitomized the high qualities of manhood that he leaves a legacy for us to emulate. He cherished his family and was an excellent provider for them. John will be solely missed by all that knew him.

A service celebrating the life of Mr. Stewart will be held at noon Friday, Aug. 19, 2011, at the West End Baptist Church, 6506 Bodyton Plank Road, Petersburg, with the Rev. Kevin Northam, officiating. Burial will commence at the Olive Branch Baptist Church, Dinwiddie, Va. Public viewing will be today at the funeral home until 8 p.m. and one hour prior to the service at the church. The family will assemble at the home at 11 a.m. on the morning of the service.

Funeral arrangements entrusted to the Joseph M. Johnson & Son Funeral Home, 530 South Sycamore St., Petersburg. 804-863-4411.

Dear John Stewart family,
I met your husband, father and grandfather at the Hopewell Moose Lodge where he played bingo and I volunteered selling extra bingo cards. He was truly one of the nicest people I have ever known. He shared his
vegetables with me, not only would he not take any money, but he would bring shelled butter beans to me when he learned they were my favorite. I lost my beloved husband of 55 years 10/2009 and I do know what you are going through. May God bless you in your sorrow. I know John will be waiting in heaven for you.
Sincerely from a white friend who did not look on him as a man of color, but as a wonderful friend.

Dearest Lillian,
The entire community shares in your loss. The educators that we became, we owe to you and John Stewart. You and John taught us patience, compassion, dedication, and loyalty. John Stewart was the epitome of educational excellence, and he demanded that of his teachers. He taught us that it is all about the children, and he encouraged us to begin with the end in mind. For that, we are all eternally grateful.
He shared our love of music, so we know he is singing with the "Great Choir" now. May God continue to bless your family as you lean on Him in this hour of sorrow.

All our love,

To Lilian Stewart and family

Mr. Stewart has not only influenced countless students throughout his career, but he also had an impact on those of us who chose education as a career path. It was my honor to work with him for many years at Dinwiddie Middle School. I can say that I have carried many of the lessons learned from him thoughout my educational endevours. He was truly a "class act" as an educator - but even more importantly, he was the role model for educational excellence. While he is no longer with us in body, his spirit and legacy will live on. My thoughts are with your family during this difficult time.

August 19, 2011

To the Stewart Family, I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Mr. Stewart was a very nice man that I met through my grandmother at bingo. He would always crack a joke and would talk about his garden and baby sitting his grandson. He will be surely missed.

May God grant your family the peace to get through this tough time.

We all were blessed to have him in our lives, if only for a little while. Keep your hands in God's hands and he will never let go.

To the family of the late John C. Stewart. I had the pleasure of bumping into Mr. Stewart some months ago at the bank. He had that familiar presence about him you know. We talked while standing in line. I told him that my mom used to drive school bus for Dinwiddie (shout out to the late Dorothy M. Brown). He remembered my mom and said some kind words.....told me about his son stationed at Randolph Air Force Base when I mentioned that I was retired from the Air Force and doing some substitute teaching. He was a very proud husband and father. May God bless all of you and keep you in His tender loving care. Mr. Stewart would be grateful.

Mr. Stewart was a fair, kind, humble, loving and observant man. My high school days were richer because of his steadfast dedication to our safety and success. This loving kindness carried over in everything he touched. In school and in the community, he was approachable, thoughtful and always willing to help. If he said it, he meant it. If he knew what a person needed, he helped. I hold so many kind thoughts through the years and am thankful to have been blessed to know him. I am so sad, but trust that God is in control.
Mrs. Stewart, I began to pray for you immediately and will continue to do so. You are such a pleasure and you brighten my day whenever I see you. Your smile, hugs and conversation are a treasure. Keep loving God as He loves others through you. I am thankful that you know and love the Lord.

I can honestly say that I'm very blessed and grateful to have had this remarkable man as my grandfather. He had such a big heart, loving all of his family and friends. He was a inspiring role model, teaching me the wrongs and rights of life. He made me laugh all the time with his "fart" game. John C. Stewart is my grandfather, and more importantly, the definition of a "real man" to me. He spoke sternly, acted nobly, and loved fully.
