Shirley Byers Obituary
Shirley was born on Nov. 10, 1940, in South Carolina to the Rev. Walter E. Byers and Mattie Byers. She was baptized at an early age by her father. Shirley was a member of Straightaway Holiness Church under the direction of Elder Waller.
She retired from the Housekeeping department at Virginia State University.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Linda C. Byers; and son, Richard A. Byers; parents, Reverend Walter E. and Mattie Byers; and sister, Ruby Davis.
She is survived by her children, James A. Byers (Darlise) and Lacretia Byers; a devoted friend, James Dean; grandchildren, Lachana Byers, Von Godette, Katrina Byers, Kashownte Byers, Shanelle Archer, Jessica Archer, Sheena Hurt, Angelique Byers, James Byers II and Helene Byers; great-grandchildren, Derrick, Kobe, Alyria, Naszae, Amir, Emonyae, Nasyr, Madison, Indira Godette and Jekeira Godette; nephew, Benny Davis; a host of cousins, other relatives; and friends.
A special thanks to Adult Health Care Solutions staff and caregiver, Ms. Velva Scott.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 9, 2009, at the chapel of J.M. Wilkerson Funeral Establishment Inc., 102 South Ave., Petersburg, VA, the Rev. Dr. Horace Jones, pastor of Cornerstone Ministries, Petersburg, Va., officiating. Interment to follow in Peoples Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at 1114 Arlington St., Petersburg, and may be contacted by calling (804) 938-1053 or (804) 733-1983.
