Charlene Williams Obituary

Charlene Dale Williams of Millville passed away in the early afternoon last Friday, January 8th, 2009.
She is survived by her husband and best friend, Bob Williams. She is also survived by her four adult children, her brother, three sisters, and four grandchildren.
Charlene was born to Otis and Eula Dale at Mountain Park, OK on July 28, 1931. She grew up in Oklahoma City, OK and was a member of the Classen High School class of '49 where she was involved in the theater arts program and voted the "Princess of Friendship" by her senior class.
Following High School, she left for Norman, OK to attend the University of Oklahoma beginning in the fall of 1949. There she was a member of Mortarboard and Phi Beta Kappa, and was selected the "Outstanding Woman Student" of 1952-1953. She graduated from OU in the spring of 1953 with a degree in anthropology. In October of that same year she married Bob Williams. It was a marriage and friendship that would last for the remaining 56 years of her life.
Following her husband's return from his deployment to Korea, Bob and Charlene began raising a family with the birth of their first daughter in Oklahoma in 1957. They had another daughter in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1958, a son in Calcutta, India in 1961, and another son back in Ann Arbor in 1962.
Bob and Charlene moved to the Los Angeles area in 1965 where Bob had accepted a position as a professor at UCLA. There, in Topanga Canyon, they settled down to raise their family. In addition to being a full time wife and mother, Charlene worked as an officer manager for the Los Angeles County public schools.
In 1990 following her husband's retirement, she and Bob moved to the cattle ranch in Millville where she was to ranch and live for the remaining 20 years of her life.
In Shasta County she was a member of the Friends of the Library, the North State Symphony League, the Cattlewomen's Association, the American Association of University Women, and the League of Women Voters. She was also a founding member of the Women's Fund of the Shasta Regional Community Foundation.
It is indescribable how many people Charlene touched throughout her life with her kindness, her warmth, her understanding, and her love. She truly loved her family, her friends and her life.
Services with a reception and fellowship to follow will be held at the Pilgrim Congregational Church on Friday, January 15, at 11 a.m. The church is located at 2850 Foothill Boulevard in Redding.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Women's Fund of the Shasta Regional Community Foundation at 1335 Arboretum Drive, Suite B, Redding, CA 96003.
Charlene, you are so missed. You were so caring, so giving, and so loving. It is difficult to imagine life without you here to brighten our days. Thank you so much for sharing your life with each of us. We love you.

I was truly saddened by Charlene's death. I only knew her for a short time, and had hoped for many more interesting and funny conversations. Seeing her at a gathering, would always make my time richer, knowing that the twinkle in her eye promised yet another good-humored exchange.
The picture shows the person, I had come to care for.

Dear Bob and kids, I was so sad to learn from Patsy and Nancy Lea of the death of Charlene. Carl and I have the nicest letter from her postmarked just after Christmas on December 30th. I, too am a first cousin, the eldest daughter of Hugh Hoover, Aunt Eula's brother. Charlene was always so pleasant and looked at the bright and funny side of everything whenever we were around her.

On a Thursday last month, when I knew Bob would be coming to Redding for Rotary, I invited Charlene over for lunch and to watch a documentary that I thought she might find interesting. Charlene always wrote lovely thank you notes and on this occasion she sent the following (an excerpt):

"Since you visit your email much more frequently than you visit your mail box I shall send my heartfelt gratitude by electronics. Be assured that my mama taught me different--but then she did not have to cope with cyberspace. A couple new experiences for me: (1) I never sit down to watch TV during daylight hours and (2) I'm so un-use to being waited on that it makes me a wee bit nervous. But given both of those I must say I could get use to that way of life."

One can only imagine how the world would benefit if everyone wrote lovely thank you messages, did not watch tv during daylight hours, and were un-use to being waited on.

Charlene was one in a trillion and I treasure having had the opportunity to know her.

Charlene would have been surprised how often she was the focus of conversation in our home. She is an inspiration. Our jealousies of her garden, her cooking and hay bale tossing abilities run deep. We miss you so much. This place will not be the same without you.

So sorry to hear of Charlene's death. I am a cousin of her's who grew up in Mountain Park, OK. I'm Hugh Hoover's middle daughter. The last time I saw Charlene and only saw Bob once was the time they drove through Mountain Park to see Uncle Hugh and Aunt Mahala. I believe I was about 16 years old at that time. I always thought Charlene was "Miss Personality". She knew how to laugh and enjoy life so much. You all are in my prayers. God bless all of you and give you strength in facing the sorry of losing her.

I always knew Charlene as "Aunt Charlie". I am her sister Joanne's eldest son and Charlie was always my favorite aunt. I can not find the words to express my saddness for her sudden death. Altough we weren't close I always stayed in contact and I will miss her greatly. She was a wonderful person who brightened every soul she met. Wiley Cunningham Los Lunas NM
