James Moden Obituary

James R. Moden, from Richmond, died peacefully on July 23, 2015 at age 84, in the company of his family. His parents were Clayton G. Moden and Bessie L. Moden and he was born as the youngest of three sons in Capac, Mich. James, more often known as Jim, was the beloved husband of Lynne Moden for 64 years, and he fathered three sons, Jeffrey, Robert and Kenneth.
Jim lived with a deep appreciation for the gift of life and for the physics of nature. He was kind, generous, gracious, and loving to all that he encountered. As an engineer, a mentor, a patriot, and philanthropist, he was loved, respected, and esteemed as an educated man of dignity and honor.
He was an inventor and a licensed professional chemical engineer who received his BS and his master's degree from Wayne State University where he earned his place in the Engineering Hall of Fame for his extraordinary contributions to Engineering and Science. Jim retired from the Naval Undersea Warfare Center in Newport, and was recognized internationally for his expertise in advanced batteries for electrical propulsion of undersea vehicles including manned vehicles, and torpedoes. His career at NUWC also won him accolades as the recipient of the "Meritorious Civilian Service Award."
During retirement, he continued his inventions by formulating an energetic, low cost, environmentally safe fuel for propelling undersea vehicles, which was successfully tested under contract with the U.S. Navy. He engaged several unique projects with his wife and sons, one of which was designing and contracting his final home in Richmond.
He is survived by his wife Lynne, his sons, Jeffrey and Kenneth Moden; his eldest brother Ed Moden of Michigan, two grandchildren Valerie & Eric, and two great-grandchildren Trista & Trent from Rhode Island.
A memorial service and celebration of his life will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 20, 2015 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, 801 Greenwich Ave., Warwick in the Plaza Ballroom.
