I was in Marvin's gun crew in Vietnam. He was our gun crew leader. Best person I Served with. Always liked to have discussions with people. I have pictures of him and our gun crew. About 12 to 15 we on the computer at work I looked up. Got his phone and talked about old times people we served with. Was great to talk to him. Sorry for the loss of great and special man.

Although I did not go to the post office very often I always enjoyed being there because Marvin was behind the counter. Our family moved here about 5 years ago and he was the first one to help me transfer all the mail and helped me with the arrangements. I always loved the down home atmosphere that Marvin provided. His passing is such a shock to me... He will be missed!

I have waited on Marvin for many yrs, I worked at Country Kithchen for many yrs then went to work at Famous Anthony's, he always came in with a smile and was never one to complain, he was one of those people that we wanted to wait on because he was sure to make you have a better day, he always had something nice to say, I will miss so much, my mom would come all the way from blacksburg to his post office just because he was there and it just made the trip worth it, he will be missed by both my mother and myself. My prayers are with you all,

I am sending Marvins family my thoughts and prayers. I will miss him deeply, this man always had a smile and kind words for everyone. He was a hero to our country and to this town. I ask him how he could remember everyone by name, he gave me a very simple and special answer, he said "because i think of everyone as my friend". Rest in peace my friend. you are missed and thought of often.

When my family first moved here three years ago, Marvin was a big part of the reason I started to feel so at home in this town. I loved going to the downtown post office and seeing how friendly he was to each and every customer. He was an outstanding public employee and he will be greatly missed.

Who will step up and try to follow in Marvin's image? Never was there a friendlier soul who treated all people with respect while wooing them with his charm and consistent good humor. Let's all try to treat our neighbors like Marvin treated us!

Marvin loved his country & his flag. A real American patriot.

I signed the book in the post office lobby and at the funeral home but I wanted to be part of this permanent record too.

Marvin was a great guy. He ALWAYS greeted his customers with a smile and kind word. He was personal & caring...the way all public employees should be. He did not distance himself from the public...he genuinely cared for all of us. We appreciate his service to our community and will miss him dearly.
Love to all,

Marvin was one of the kindest, sweetest people I've ever known. He always took time to talk to my children every time we came in to the post office and loved talking about his own grandchildren. He always knew the best way to get your packages to their destination quickest. He was the heart and soul of the town. To the Family,
I am crushed about Marvins passing, one thing I do know is GOD got a good one!!!! I didn't know him personally but when I went inside the post office, it was always a pleasure to chat with him and I could tell he was a child of GOD and to me that says it all, when someone doesn't have to ask if you are saved, they just know from your actions and words. My thoughts, and my prayers are with you.

April 15, 2010

Marvin was such a wonderful person and I enjoyed seeing him at the Post Office when I worked downtown. The line would be out the door, but Marvin would take the time to greet each person individually. Even the ones in line didn't mind the wait because everyone enjoyed "visiting" with him. He will greatly missed and the Downtown Post Office will never be the same.

April 14, 2010

Marvin, I never got to tell you how my trip went...you were the nicest and most sincere person, and I know that you are in a better place now. Rest in peace

Kayla and Family;
I am very sorry for your loss. I went to the downtown post office at least twice a week and Mr. Jarels was always there with a smile on his face. I often stood in his line with several people in front of me and he always took time to talk to EACH person weither asking about their family or how their day was going. He was a very caring person. This is a true loss for Christiansburg. Mr. Jarels, I would just like to say it was a pleasure standing in line at your post office. May you rest among the angels.

Marv,
I will never forget your kindness and friendship. There were many days when I was sick or just feeling down that I knew all I needed was to come see you and I would feel uplifted when I left. I was always comforted just by your smile and kind words. Your were one of my favorite people, and I will never forget you! You were the best postman a friend could ask for! Love Always.

What a lose. A man with a wonderful smile and always friendly. I never remember him ever not being friendly no matter how long the line was at the post office. He always took the time for each individual person and treated everyone with the same respect. The post office will never be the same without that smiling face. God has added yet another angel. Marvin will be missed and my condolences to all. I will be praying for the family.

I only knew Marvin from going into the Post Office he was always so polite, friendly and kind. I then chose only to go to that Post Office because of his kindness. I work at an office just down the street from the Post Office and are whole office was in such shock and disbelief when we heard the news. Some of the office staff went to the Post Office everyday. It truly sadden us all to lose someone we consider a friend. He touched so many of our lives by the kindness he showed toward us and to others, he will deeply be missed. Our hearts and sympathy goes out to his whole family. May God comfort you in your time of sorrow.

Marvin's heart was always in the right place and he always made you feel like you had all of his attention. I always looked forward to seeing him at the post office when I came in to visit my parents. My dad and I always were on our toes on April Fools Day because Marvin was the best at getting you good when you least expected it. He always made us laugh and gave us something to look forward to. His loss is more than one could bear and I wish his family all the love and support from our Father in Heaven and wish them peace and comfort during this truly difficult time.

So sorry for your loss. The first time that I met Marvin we were picking at the post office and he made a comment about my boss coming in there all the time and he said "I rather for you to come in instead of your boss you have got a prettier face than he does." He always made you feel welcomed if if he was busy and the line was backed up to the door, he always made sure to ask how your day was and always had a smile on his face.
May god bless you all

Every single time I went in the downtown Post Office, Marvin always called me by name. He was so polite and friendly to everyone! I remember hearing him talk about the Redskins and the Cowboys. And I told him that I was a Redskins fan but my daddy raised me, "It doesn't matter who wins, as long as it isn't the Cowboys!" Also, the few times a year that he took off, everyone that came through the line always asked "Where's Marvin, when will he be back?" He will truly be missed!

Mrs. Jarels & Family:

Thank you for sharing Marvin with his multitude of friends - his customers at the Post Office. Marvin oozed personality & took a genuine interest in his customer's family, health, hobbies, sports interests, etc. He truly cared. One could enter the Post Office in a not so good mood, but after getting up to the window & chatting with Marvin, your spirits were uplifted & you left with a smile on your face, a spring your step - feeling so much better! He was wonderful therapy for everyone. Marvin was an angel on earth & now an awesome angel in heaven - probably already promoted to chairman of the welcoming committee. May God bless you with peace, comfort, love & strength.

What a sad loss for us and what a joyful day in heaven! Marvin was such a heart warmer kind of a man. No matter what kind of a day you were having when you walked through the door at the post office, one thing you could always depend on, when you walked out of that door, your day was a little brighter, because of the man behind the counter. What a blessing he was to so many people! Thank you for sharing your joy of life to so many people!

April 12, 2010

Marvin came into my life when he worked at the Powder Plant with my father-Earl Keister. They spent many hours in "discussion" about the Redskins and the Cowboys. Then I had a PO box at Cambria and finally downtown. I am a Skins fan too so we always had something to talk about. Somehow it seemed fitting to implode the Cowboys stadium yesterday-- I'm sorry he didn't get to enjoy the new one.
He was so proud of his family--you are all the greatest blessing in his life. He certainly made my day with every visit to pick up new stamps or share the latest Lynn's stamp news.
Today he will rest just 4 rows up and six spaces over from mom and dad at Roselawn. I bet they are still having "discussions" about the 'skins and 'boys.
There are no words to express how much Marvin will be missed.

To the Jarels Family,

What a special jewel of a man! Five years ago when I retired and moved back to Christiansburg, Marvin was one of the first people I met. Immediately, I was reminded of the character of this area. Marvin was always willing to help and was so kind and caring. We had many "Redskins" conversations. He is truly going to be missed; he can never be replaced. I believe in angels, and now I know one who has returned to heaven.

As so many have expressed, the downtown Christiansburg Post Office will never be the same. Marvin is most deserving of the many guest book entries. He truly made each customer feel welcome. I especially remember his advice on the best way to pack and mail packages to my daughter while she was away completing educational internships. He was so kind and understanding of how much I missed her and spoke proudly of his own children. We saw him several days ago while out shopping and, of course, he recognized and greeted us with a warm "Hello Ladies" and smile. He will certainly be missed. My sincere sympathy goes out to his family.

My thoughts and prayers are with you. I first met Marvin 25 years ago, when my ex-husband went to work at the post office in Christiansburg. He and my husband worked together and became friends. Marvin always displayed a happy and caring disposition. Marvin often checked on me and my children to see that we where ok, or if we needed anything. Even after my kids had grown up, anytime I would go into the post office he took time to inquire about my children. A true, honest and sincere friend. I will miss seeing his smiling face.

I didn't go in the post office that much, but I felt like Marvin was an old friend. The extra care he showed each person has translated into all the love for him that you see in this guest book. We often ask "WHY?" and the answer is not easy...only God can answer that but, we all know that a beautiful angel has gone on to meet his reward. Christiansburg loved Marvin and it has been said hundreds of time since Wednesday afternoon...We all will miss him so much...such a good man, good husband, good father and granddad and good son. His Dad cleans our office. Being the good son he was, he would clean our office to help his Dad when he had hip surgery until his Dad was back to work and even then he would help him.
My sincere sympathy to the entire family as they deal with this terrible loss. Just remember God is your refuge in time of trouble and grief Love you all

What an enormous loss and extraordinary legacy. Marvin, you are “downtown”.
My son had a post office box and I use to collect his mail. I went running in one day right at closing because I had forgotten the key. Marvin laughed and gave me the mail and also told me if I ever forgot the key again to just yell and he would hand me the mail. Sure enough I went in at lunch time one day and the window was closed. I yelled “Marvin, are you in there?” and could hear him chuckling, he brought the mail to me laughing. I never went to the post office that he didn’t ask about my kids, especially my son because he rides a Harley also, and we had lots to talk about. You will surely be missed, my friend.

Nadean and family,

Jackie and I were so shocked to hear about the untimely death of Marvin. We both went to school with Marvin and have known him all our lives. I was just in the post office week before last to talk to him about our RCI dealings. What a tremendous loss to the entire community. He will always be in our hearts. May your memories and God’s grace bring you comfort in the days and years to follow.

April 11, 2010

There are no words that come to my mind to really express the pain in my heart at the lost of a very, very special friend. We worked together for more than twenty eight years. Not very often in life does a friend such as Marvin comes along. We shared many good times together, especially, when He was always pulling the ole April Fools joke on me, and I fell for it almost every time. When I got cancer and had to retire from the Postal Service, He was the very first one to stand by my side for support and it never came to an end. People like Marvin just don't come into your life everyday, I believe they are a gift from God. I don't know who will call me now during the Dallas Cowboy and Redskins games. I hope they place a large picture of him at the window of the downtown post office. I will miss him and my heart will always be heavy. I know God will have compassion for him, how could He not, for such a great person. I pray God watch over his family, not only in these times, but forever. John R Osborne, Christiansburg, Va.

He joked with me about how full my mailbox would get before I would come get my mail so one day I told him, "I promise I will do better". I made a point to do better so he would know I kept my word. He reminded me of my Dad, who was a vet. He was just a good guy. My sincere blessings go out to the family and friends.

You hear he term "people person" a lot and most times it is deserving. This time it is most deserving because in Marvin's case it seems the term could have been written just for him. There was never a time you walked in the Post office, you weren't greeted with a warm smile and a kind word. Such a positive attitude. His glass was always half full. Our thoughts and prayers are with you, his family. Rest in peace dear friend.

We will always have special memories of Marvin. He was the perfect example of a kind and gentle man. We met him first when we were building our house in Lucas estates about 20 years ago. He always had a smile and a kind word for everyone. He will be truly missed

We should all strive to leave behind the legacy Marvin left. Can you imagine a world filled with Marvin's who took the time to give everyone a kind and encouraging word?
Marvin and my brother are best friends, so much alike that this has left a huge hole in my heart. My peace will come in knowing that Heaven now has our wonderful friend.
"Now may the Lord of peace Himself give you peace always in every way. The Lord be with you all.

Marvin gave our community such joy. If I felt gloomy walking into the post office, it never lasted after talking to Marvin. I always left with a smile. He was an inspiration to so many. My daughter is taking some distance education classes and mailed in many assignments over the last year. He always had words of encouragement and support for her, taking such a sincere interest. Being an RN, we had many conversations about his wonderful daughter and her accomplishments. He is so proud of her. Oh My Gosh, it is such a huge loss for our community. His good will and kindness touched so many lives. I always felt like I was in Mayberry everytime I walked into that post office. My deepest and sincerest condolences go out to his family. Godspeed, Marvin. We all miss you so very much.

We were so sorry to hear about Marvin's accident. Our most heartfelt thoughts are with the family. As I reflect on the pleasure of being the family's neighbor while residing in Windmill Hills, we have the upmost respect for Marvin and his family. He was such a respected man.

Marvin's smile, his thoughtfulness and sense of humor will live on in the hearts and minds of everyone lucky enough to have known him. Marvin was THE center of town and more a public figure in downtown Christiansburg than any mayor or sheriff of any town could be-the service he provided each and every customer there will never be matched. Marvin, you were such a good person-I am fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with you.
