Roger Krum Obituary

May 5, 1942 - Oct. 22, 2015 Roger passed away on October 22, 2015 at the age of 73 after a long illness. He was born May 5, 1942 in Sanger, CA, and raised in Fresno. Roger moved to Sacramento in 1966 where he lived the remainder of his life. Roger is survived by his wife Jean, the love of his life, his children Daniel Krum (Lanette), Alison Buxie (John), Erin Mahaffy, brothers Donald (Sandra, nephew Phillip and niece Sarah) and Thomas (Marsha), and seven grandchildren, Ryley, Mason, John, Alex, Zelia, Quincy, and Sophia. Roger earned a BS in Psychology with extensive studies in music from CSU Fresno and an MS in Counseling from CSU Sacramento. He worked for the State of California for 24 years, primarily in supervisory and administrative positions, plus 18 years as Executive Director of the Sacramento Traditional Jazz Society which included serving as Director of the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee when it was the largest traditional jazz festival in the world. He retired in 2006. Roger served as President of the Sacramento Goal Rushers (a SF 49ers Booster Club), the Sacramento Traditional Jazz Society, and the American Federation of Jazz Societies, plus Chairperson of the Sacramento Convention and Visitors Bureau Board of Directors. He also served on the Board of Directors for Race for the Arts, the Arts and Business Council, and Business Volunteers for the Arts. Roger enjoyed many years as a seasonal seats holder for the San Francisco 49ers, coaching softball, attending plays at the Sacramento Theatre Company, Ashland Shakespeare Festival, and horse races. His passion was traditional jazz, playing violin at age five and taking up the bass as a teenager. He played bass for over 20 years with the Fulton Street Jazz Band. The family wishes to give special thanks to his care provider and friend Claude Koi and to the compassionate and caring staff at DaVita Sunset Dialysis and Kaiser Roseville Hospital. At his request there will be no funeral services.

I CANNOT believe that it has been 7 years since Roger has left all of us----family, friends and all that knew him. I went to high school with Roger and was lucky enough to be able to enjoy his musical talents from an early age. He is missed every day by so many. So many that wish he were still with us. He was a proud member of the Class of 1960 at Fresno High School. We recently had a reunion - and Roger was thought of - talked about and truly missed. Our thoughts are with his family and want them to know that he is still thought of by many - on a daily basis! He was a true TREASURE and sooooo missed!

Over the course of 40 years, he was my friend, my confidant, and my strong shoulder to lean on. Without him, I wouldn't have made it this far. Loved this man. Always will. A treasure who made the world a better place for those lucky enough to have known him.

Roger was a wonderful person and we are all better for knowing him. He adored his wife and loved his children (both two legged and for legged) and grand children.

I know I was always in a better mood after seeing him. He was a wonderfully gifted person. He truly will be missed! My deepest condolences to Jean and family.

Roger, a good and caring individual, I will never forget the day I met Roger at the clinic on my first day, he gave me hope and confidence that everything would be ok 'one more day' were his words everytime I saw him, thank you always, god bless you and your family....

I worked for Roger for four years. He was the best boss I ever had. Open door and clear direction coupled with an amazing intelligence and sense of humor. Through his dedication the Jubilee reached a high point for festivals and would have continued being successful as long as he was at the helm. He clearly understood his audience. Fulton Street was an incredible jazz band. He had a great dedicated love of his "roadies", Daniel and Allison and knew he didn't deserve Jean. I think of him every day and will miss him. I know the family has lost a great man and good friend.

I haven't seen Roger since I retired from dentistry in 1997, but I've often thought of Roger and was saddened when I saw his photo in the Bee today. I just wanted to say how much I adored Roger. A truly lovely man. He was a ray of sunshine every time he came to our office; all my staff loved him. My condolences to all his loved ones.

I met Roger when I moved to Sacramento to work in the Field Operations Division. He had great possion and energy for his work and his art. He could play that bass.

Roger and I were friends in the 5th grade (and every year after) where we tried out for the John Muir Elementary School band on the cello. I dropped and he continued. Roger also helped my doughter. SherriLynn Colby, join the fun of Dixie jazz. See attended Jazz Camp put on by the Sac Dixie Jazz Soc. and ended up teaching vocals at the camp.
Sad he has left us and I extend my sympathy to all of his family.. Rich

I knew Roger in high school. Nice guy. He was part of the Four Teens, a teenage jazz quartet and they achieved a great deal of fame, appearaing on national TV. I think it was Ted Mack'sOriginal Amateur Hour. Roger on bass, Nikki Lampkin on drums, Haarvey diamond on piano and Johnny Stefanneli on trumpet.

Roger was a valued and true friend of the Fresno High School, Class of 1960. I was lucky enough to spend time with Roger and Jean in the last few years when he would be in Fresno. He loved attending our class reunions. He had many friends that were lucky enough to know him as a young man with unbelievable musical talent. He also loved to write in his later years and shared his talents with a great pal - Larry Hill. Roger's first wife Linda Yetter Bates was also a member of our high school class. I was so proud of how Linda and her husband Barry took such good care of him. Personally, I will miss him so much and he will always be in my heart. Jean has become a special person to me and my heart is with her and his children. I think we all know there is great music going on these days in heaven-------we will always miss you - Roger.
