Laura Elaine Kooyman Jarvis

Laura Jarvis Obituary

Laura Elaine Kooyman Jarvis 1940 ~ 2009 Elaine was born in Salt Lake on her father, George Kooyman's, birthday Groundhog Day, Feb. 2, 1940. She grew up on Salt Lake's West side with her mother Lela Faye, brother LeRoy, and sisters Virginia, Barbara and Sondra, keeping house after the death of her father. Finding her true love early, Elaine married Robert A. Jarvis, Jr. right out of West High on Oct 4, 1958 and started the family she always wanted. She was an amazing, creative and loving mother to their sons Robert Arthur III and Micheal Gerard and their daughter Laura LeAnn (also born on her mom's birthday). Elaine cared deeply about people and had the gift of making life easier for everyone around her. In the mid 70's she and Bob were able to build a home in her dream location, the mountains, where she made everyone feel welcome with her big smile and incredible cooking! She filled her home with examples of her exquisite needlework and craft projects of all descriptions to make with her granddaughters; Alex, Devon and Carmen. Elaine enjoyed many years working for the Park City School District and her involvement in the Catholic Church and Park City Elks. Although not fond of the spotlight, Elaine was great at making things happen and was able to find the skills needed for any job she tackled-professional or artistic. More influential than she knew, Elaine amplified the talents of co-workers, friends and family-she brought out their very best. She loved the adventure of travel, visiting all 50 states and many other countries. Elaine gently passed on the morning of Jan. 3, 2009 in her beloved home after a brave, year-long battle with cancer. The family would like to thank Elaine's doctor Jonathan Whisenant, M.D. and the staff of the Utah Cancer Specialists at the Intermountain Medical Center for their care of Elaine. Her warmth and sparkle will be missed by those she leaves behind: her husband Bob, sons Rob and Micheal (David Ulibarri), daughter Laura (Gregory) Horn, grand-daughters Alex Jarvis, Devon and Carmen Horn, brother LeRoy (Bonnie) Kooyman, sisters Virginia Eliason, Barbara (Robert) Riga and Sondra (Richard) Garcia, mother-in-law Coral Jarvis, sister-in-law Patti O'Keefe, and brother-in-law Austin I. Jarvis. She is preceded in death by her parents. A viewing and ceremony will be held Tuesday, Jan. 6th from 6-8 p.m. at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Elaine's name to: Utah Cancer Foundation, 3838 S. 700 East, Salt Lake City, 84106. Contact Ann Jensen, 801-281-6861 for directions to donate on online. A celebratory party to honor Elaine will be held when the wildflowers bloom.

I once heard someone say that it's not death that brings us the greatest loss in life, but all that dies inside of us. As life goes on, I hope that you will find ways to celebrate the memory of your devoted mother. I know she would want you all to live every day to the fullest and continue the celebration of her contagious love for life. May time speed your healing.

I met Elaine for the first time on Easter of 2007. Her Son Micheal My Partner Knew I was nervous to meet his mom. She gave me a big hug, grabbed my hand sat me down and said lets get to know each other. From then on she treated me as one of her own children. I will miss her dearly as I only had a couple of years to have her as a Mother-In-Law. Elaine you will be in my heart always.
Love,
Dave

Dear Bob, Robby, Michael and Laura:
My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. I was very saddened to hear of Elaine's passing. My parents were good friends with Bob and Elaine when you use to live across the street from Parkview elementary, they were Rex and Virginia Turner. My mother thought the world of Elaine and spent alot of time planning the activities with her for the PTA with Parkview. Elaine was one of the sweetest ladies I've ever met. May you rest with the angels Elaine.

As far back as I can remember Aunt Lannie and Uncle Bob have been an important part of my life. I hold every memory in the deepest place of my heart. Lannie had the gift of making each of us feel special and loved. She did everything with beauty and quiet strength. This last battle was tremendous but she showed us all how to endure - through faith and love.

God's peace I pray for each of you my dear family.

Loving you, Debbie

Elaine was the lifeblood here at Treasure Mountain Middle School where she functioned as executive secretary. She was warm and welcoming to students, parents, and staff members. I remember how lost I felt when I first started working at the school. She changed that for me, and I'll be forever grateful.

Over 9 years ago I met Rob. He introduced me to the rest of the Jarvis family. It was easy to see that this family was Elaine's pride and joy. This loving family became my family too. Elaine holds a very special place in my heart and always will. I will miss seeing her smile. I have so many fond memories of the times we spent together, but I will never forget Bob, Elaine and I, year after year, taking Ali to her softball tournaments. Through the early mornings, late nights and extreme heat we had so much fun and Elaine couldn't wait to do it all again the next year. Rob ~ Thanks for sharing your mom with me. Elaine ~ Thanks for teaching me so many wonderful things. Thank you most for your love. I love you with all my heart!
