LYNDON CLAYTON Obituary

Lyndon Whitney Clayton 1925 ~ 2011 Lyndon Whitney Clayton was born February 22, 1925, to Lyndon Whitney Clayton and Madeleine Estelle McClellan in Salt Lake City, Utah. He died March 28, 2011, in Salt Lake City at age 86. From his cozy Avenues home he attended East High School and then the University of Utah where he graduated in five years with a medical degree. He was proud to affiliate with the Sigma Chi fraternity and to claim amateur boxing as a hobby. On April 2, 1949, Whit married Elizabeth Graham Touchstone, who had instantaneously won his heart. He served as a physician in the Air Force and then practiced medicine as an obstetrician gynecologist in Whittier, California, for 35 years. In 1964 Whit and Betty's marriage was solemnized for eternity in the Salt Lake Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS). Whit served as a bishop for the LDS Church. After retiring, he and Betty moved to Jackson, Wyoming, where he served as president of the hospital board during the development and construction of the new St. John's Medical Center. He and Betty served a mission for the LDS Church as medical advisors to the North America Northwest Area. Whit was a guest instructor at the Teton Science School and was a docent at the National Museum of Wildlife Art. He was passionate about everything scientific and was the classic polymath, usually reading several books at a time. Whit loved to laugh, tell stories, ski, identify wild flowers and constellations, hike and fish, eat red meat and chocolate cake, sing (he always knew the lyrics) and dote on his family. Whit is survived by his lifelong best friend and wife Elizabeth (Betty) Graham Touchstone and their four sons: Whitney (Kathy) of Salt Lake City; Weatherford (Lisa) of Newport Beach, California; John (Elaine) of Henderson, Nevada; and Craig (Meggan) of Costa Mesa, California; 23 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren (and counting); his sisters Mary Lynne (Conrad) Hansen and Adele Collipriest. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Jacob. Friends may come Sunday, April 3, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. for a viewing at Larkin Sunset Lawn, 2350 East 1300 South, Salt Lake City, Utah, or Monday, April 4, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Crestview LDS meetinghouse, 2795 East Crestview Drive, Salt Lake City, Utah 84108. Services will be held Monday, April 4, at noon at the Crestview meetinghouse. Interment at Salt Lake City Cemetery.

With deepest sympathy from the Tong Family. (England.) Whilst we do not know Bishop Clayton, we have known Weth. Our greatest work is the work that we do with our children. Knowing Weth and Lisa, we know that this great brother (along with the late Madison and Marion Thomas) performed that work with distinction.

Please accept our love and condolences.

Dr. Clayton enriched the lives of everyone who had the good fortune to know him; his smile lighting up every room he entered, and his kind words bringing joy to all those who had the pleasure of his company. I have so many fond memories of the fun times in the Whittier 5th ward of the 60’s. Thank you all for being a part of those memories.

My first memory of Bishop Clayton was my first Bishop's interview as a deacon. I was petrified but he made me feel comfortable as he explained my duties as a priesthood holder. He always made sure that Elaine and the Hatori boys were well taken care of and he will be greatly missed by us all. I am thankful to have known this man and his beautiful and giving family.

So very sorry to hear of Bishop Claytons passing. Many years ago when my father, Richard Taylor, was very ill, it was Bishop (Dr.) Clayton who admitted him to the hospital and rounded up some of his associates to help diagnose his illness when others failed. My dad was the only man with an OBGYN as his admitting Dr.:) But is was because of that act of kindness and concern that he was diagnoised correctly. May your family feel the Savior's arms during this time of loss and find comfort in your knowledge of the plan of salvation

I am grateful to Dr. Clayton for being instrumental in placing me in the care of my wonderful parents! I have had a wonderful life and I'm sure he was inspired to connect two wonderful women, one who was too young to care for me and one who desperately wanted me, many years ago. My whole family has been eternally blessed! My condolences to Dr. Clayton's family.

You will always be Bishop Clayton to me. As a youth, I remember your orange grove and how you shared your delicious fruit with many members and friends. We would drink homemade orange juice at ward activities. You allowed the youth of the Whittier 5th ward to decorate your barn and hold dances there. I have many fond memories of you and your family. Always very generous and kind to everyone. I'll see you on the other side Bishop Clayton.

Congratulations Bishop Clayton, for a life of service faithfully completed. To the Clayton family, my best wishes and prayers go with you during this time. When my grandfather, Hank Van Leeuwen passed away, it was a great comfort to remember all of the things, perfect and not, that we loved about him. May you find comfort in your memories and your knowledge of the gospel and the plan of our Father.

I loved and admired Dr. Clayton VERY much!! I did alterations for him for several years and he would make me raise my arm to the square and promise NOT to tell any of his ob/gyn patients his waist size !!! I learned to make turkey soup from the carcas bones at their home . He gave me good counsel when I needed it. I remember when one of the boys was going on a mission and he thought the couch arms looked shabby so he had me use the fabric in the middle of the back of the couch to make arm cover...it was always against a wall anyway he said ! I love your family ! Thanks for being a part of my life !!

Bishop Clayton was a delightful man and I enjoyed him so much when I lived in the Whittier 5th ward. He always seemed "bigger than life" to me...in the way he was an example and by his testimony.

I express my sincere condolences to the Clayton family. I remember fondly Bishop Clayton and his family from my time growing up in Whittier as a member of the Whittier 5th Ward, as well as occasions years later when I was blessed to associate with Whit and his family in Salt Lake City. My wife served as Adele's counselor in our ward Relief Society presidency. I was blessed to conduct the funeral services in our ward for Whit's mother, Madeleine Clayton. May the Lord bless the Clayton family at this time of sorrow and loss. Fred Graham (Salt Lake City)

Our heart felt condolences to the Clayton family. We here in whittier have only the fondest of memories of Whit while he served as Bishop and a High Councilor to several wards here. He has had an impact on many lives in the whittier Ca. area both within the church and the community in general. We will miss this stalwart.
Warmest regards,
