Andrew Diehl Obituary

DIEHL
Andrew Kemper Diehl, MD, MSc, MACP, died peacefully at home on December 24, 2013, as the result of a brain tumor.
Born September 14, 1946, in San Antonio, Andy graduated from Alamo Heights High School, Yale University, Harvard Medical School, and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He completed his internship at LA County/Harbor General Hospital; served for two years in the Indian Health Service on the Navajo Reservation in Tuba City, AZ; and completed an internal medicine residency in San Antonio. A member of the faculty of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio since 1977, he was for many years chief of the Division of General Internal Medicine and O. Roger Hollan Professor of Internal Medicine. He retired on his birthday in 2012.
In his professional life, Andy was an active participant and officer of the Society of General Internal Medicine; of the American College of Physicians, which he served as governor of the southern Texas region and a member of the ACP PAC, as well as the Texas chapter; and of several test-writing committees of the National Board of Medical Examiners.
Andy was for many years a member of the San Antonio Zoo board, and, since his retirement, had joined the board of Planned Parenthood Trust of South Texas and volunteered with the Headwaters Conservancy and the San Antonio Area Foundation. He supported many local cultural organizations through both donations and attendance.
A lifelong competitive and then recreational swimmer, Andy also greatly enjoyed talking his dogs for long walks, reading the Express-News thoroughly, drinking coffee, attending the San Antonio Symphony and other local musical performances, cheering for the Spurs, researching family history, and spending time with his family. He loved San Antonio and knew a tremendous amount about its history, both distant and recent. Although extremely serious about his profession, he was also delightfully silly with his family and friends.
Andy was preceded in death by his parents, Kemper Wilson Diehl and Mary Suzanne Farnum Diehl, and his youngest brother, Stephen Kemper Diehl.
Survivors include his wife and best friend of 43 years, Nancy Salling Diehl; daughters Marley Suzanne Diehl of San Antonio and Audrey Aline Diehl and husband Dakota Witzenburg, and grandson Miles Kemper Diehl Witzenburg, of Los Angeles; brother Jackson Diehl and wife Jean, and nephew Sandy Diehl and niece Caroline Diehl; sister-in-law Lindsay Porter Diehl and nephews Kemper Diehl and wife Hanna, and Porter Diehl; brother-in-law John Salling and wife Condy, and nephews Matthew Salling and wife Mandy and son Jackson, and Mark Salling.
Private burial. A memorial event will be held at a later date. Check caringbridge.org/visit/andydiehl for information.

My dear friend, Andy Diehl was a remarkable physician, a superb educator, a very effective leader. He was an excellent example to young physicians of what is important as one pursues a career in medicine. My sympathy to the family of Andy Diehl. I know they will miss him and we physicians in academic medicine in Texas certainly will miss him.

I am sad to hear of your loss. I had worked with Dr. Diehl for many years, I made his appointments at the clinic in UHS hospital when we worked together. He always made me laugh when he came into the clinic every Wednesday afternoon. He will be missed by all. He was a great person.

I also extend my deepest sympathies to Andy's family. What a legacy of friendship, kindness for others, and dedication to service he leaves. I am lucky to have had him as a "caring chief" during my 12 year association with UTHSCSA. His smile, wit, and concerned guidance are missed.

I had the privilege of working with Andy in a variety national medical setings, particularly the National Board of Medical Examiners, Society of General Internal Medicine, and the American College of Physicians, where I served as president last year. He was a consummate physician, reasearcher, and teacher, but more importantly, one of the finest people I have ever known. He will be sorely missed by his colleagues and friends. Our thoughts are with Nancy and family.

Andy was one of those truly lovely people in life that one is blessed if they are lucky enough to have had him pass through their life. He always had kind words and a gentle spirit with those around him. Having spent many memorable years swimming with him in our much younger years, I am so sad to hear of his passing. My prayers and heart go out to you, Nancy and the family. I am so glad I was able to see him this past spring when we came to SA for a visit.

I am so sorry for your tremendous loss, Nancy. May sweetest, silliest, fondest memories and gratitude for so many good years shared with your greatest partner and friend be your guide through this most difficult time. Peace be with you...

“And when your sorrow is comforted (time soothes all sorrows) you will be content that you have known me. You will always be my friend. You will want to laugh with me. And you will sometimes open your window, so, for that pleasure... And your friends will be properly astonished to see you laughing as you look up at the sky! Then you will say to them, 'Yes, the stars always make me laugh!' And they will think you are crazy. It will be a very shabby trick that I shall have played on you...” ? Nancy and Marley and the rest of the Family,,,,didn't know Andy professionally, but knew him as a neighbor. We're gonna miss him so much. My fondest memory of Andy was seeing him walk more than one dog at a time down the neighborhood streets of King William. Sometimes with Marley, but always happy to stop and chat. I was always so pleased to see him more often after he retired and thought how great this was going to be for him and the Family,,,dogs included!! Makes his loss even more painful to think about,,,very sorry for your loss. Ed and Dana Haverlah

Dear Nancy and Family,

How sad to lose such a wonderful person who gave so much to everyone who knew him. I have always treasured my relationship with Andy. We had so many stimulating interactions, enriched by his remarkable intellect, along with his unique sense of humor that often kept me chuckling to myself long after we had parted. He made many important contributions to UTHSCSA as he set the tone of excellence and led his faculty and staff in the development of a model program of education, research, and patient care in academic general internal medicine. I will miss Andy very badly, as will his many friends and colleagues. I send my most sincere condolences to you, his much beloved wife and family, hoping that you will find the strength to endure his loss and will be sustained by your many fond memories of this remarkable man.

Andy's death leaves such a hole in all of us. May it be some consolation to know that his life brought so much goodness into the world that continues on. My sincere condolences to the Diehl Family on your loss of your life partner, father, son, brother & friend to many whose lives were touched by his sincerity & kindness.

I met Dr. Diehl in the mid 70's at the former Robert B. Green Hospital. He was Chief Attendant of the ER/Medicine at the time & I worked in the ER Registration. Part of my duties was to document and tag all DOA's. He & I befriended one another when we both shared the same office. Back in the
day, office space was shared & sparse, and diva/divo attitudes were non existent. Dr. Diehl soon realized that I had an issue w/tagging DOA's, & he often assisted me with this gruesome task.

When he announced he was leaving for an ideal European opportunity, I was as elated as I was sad to watch him leave on his new journey of knowledge and research in medicine.

This story may not be important or interesting to others to read, but I wanted to share how Dr. Diehl impressed & went out of his way to help at the time an inexperienced 19yo, so many years ago & I've not forgotten his patience, our conversations re: the mind, the psyche and his kindness to help me with certain morgue details.

In God's name I pray ~Peace
