STEPHEN LOCKLEY Obituary

Stephen Lockley May 28th, 1953 - July 19th, 2010 Stephen Ronald Lockley, the youngest of two sons of Eileen Mary Gaudin Stocker and Ronald Mathias Lockley, was born on May 28th, 1953 in Tenby, Wales. Soon thereafter, the family moved to the nearby estate of Orielton, where his father, a well-known naturalist, and his mother ran a wildlife center, which proved to be a beautiful environment in which he could spend his childhood. He attended Hundleton Primary School where his great love of reading first became apparent. In 1962, when the family moved to England, Stephen went to Ashfold Prep School in Oxfordshire. In 1966 he moved on to Leighton Park School in Reading. He left in 1969 to go to Farnham Art School and then to Epsom Art College where he earned a diploma in Ceramics. After art school, Stephen lived with several close friends on a farm in Dumfries, Scotland where they made and sold their pottery. In the mid-1970s, he became involved with Kham House, a Tibetan Buddhist meditation center in Ashton-Saffron-Walden run by Lama Chime Rinpoche. He spent the next several years studying and practicing Buddhism, whilst earning his keep at a sugar factory in the neighboring town of Bury St. Edmunds. During his stay at Kham house, Stephen met Betsy LeVan, and within a year they were married. In 1979, Stephen and Betsy moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where Stephen worked as a waiter at Victor's Restaurant, while honing his skills as a potter in his home studio, which he built himself. During the years of 1984-1985, Stephen and Betsy traveled around the world, spending time in a number of countries including India, Nepal, Bali, and New Zealand. In 1987, their son Daniel was born. Soon thereafter, Stephen began working at Kilborn Pottery in the town of Pilar. In the mid-1990's, Stephen started his career working with the disabled through agencies such as Challenge New Mexico, which prepared him for his eventual occupation as a private caregiver, an occupation he was able to successfully carry out because of his compassionate nature seen by all who knew him. Throughout his life, Stephen was a seeker of knowledge as evidenced by his voracious reading on topics including history, spirituality, psychology, and art. He also had an innate creativity, which shone through both at home and on the job. Stephen is survived by his son, Daniel Lockley; his brother, Martin Lockley; his half-sister Ann Mark of New Zealand; his niece, Katie Lockley; and his nephew, Peter Lockley. Those wishing to contact the family may get in touch with Daniel Lockley (Santa Fe, New Mexico) or Martin Lockley (Golden, Colorado).

I lived at both Kham House and Marpa Institute with Steve. At the institute we had a large motley collection of ordinary old plates and bowls, some cracked and chipped, for regular daily use. Steve showed me his college degree piece which was a superbly crafted bowl, white, cream and grey flecked in colour, a real work of art that would normally be on a special shelf and appreciated. He insisted that it go into the general pile of daily dishes. When I said in alarm that it would inevitably get damaged he laughed and said "pots are for using, not for looking at!" It was like the line in a Zen anecdote and it has stayed with me ever since. I still miss him, he was such a lovely gentle man. [email protected]

I last heard from Stephen in January 2010. We used to email each other every three months or so over the last 5 years. I knew Stephen from Kham House days and I was also one of the Sugar Beeters. I have very fond memories of him and I will miss him. John. U.K. [email protected]
