Gordon Younger Obituary

Gordon Myles Younger

Gordon Myles Younger, 79, passed away in his home in Seattle after an extended illness. Gordon founded a corrugated box business and grew it into a major NW manufacturer, employing 500 people in four states. He was a substantial contributor to charitable causes including protecting the natural environment of the West. And he was a widely read, thoughtful and strongly opinionated thinker who kept everyone around him intellectually engaged.

Gordon was born on April 26, 1938 in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania to Arvid Myles and Edith Younger. He attended Grinnell College, received an MBA from Wharton, and served in the army in Leavenworth, Kansas. He moved to the Pacific Northwest to work for the Boise Cascade Corporation in the 1960's as a sales representative.

Gordon decided to start his own company, named Seattle Packaging, in 1967 after a dispute over a 25-cent an hour raise with Boise Cascade. Gordon had the idea that instead of trying to make everything cheaper and cheaper, that you could try to make things a little better, and charge a little more. He felt that if you paid your employees a little more than you had to, and treated them a little more than fair, they would work harder for their customers.

By using this philosophy and re-investing in the enterprise, Gordon grew the business, starting and incorporating Beaverton Packaging, Spokane Packaging, Sheets Unlimited, Econobox, and Alliance Packaging. One of the things that he was most proud of in his life was that he was able to offer exceptional healthcare and other benefits to his employees while still running a successful business. Gordon was involved in his companies until the end of his life.

Gordon took great passion in philanthropic pursuits. He was a major supporter of the Western Watersheds Project whose mission is to protect and restore western watersheds and wildlife. He supported Advocates of the West, an non-profit environmental law firm that works to protect natural landscapes and native wildlife. He also purchased Greenfire, a 440 acre nature preserve, to create a tangible example of how over-used lands could be returned to their native state. Gordon was a major contributor towards college education for disadvantaged youth having supported more than a dozen students in post high school education.

Gordon had a number of strong personal passions. Although his formal education was in business, Gordon became an amateur science expert in his adult life. He read hundreds of books on his favorite scientific topics including physics and the natural world. He was passionately politically involved, willing to spend untold hours explaining the virtues of the Democratic Party. Gordon was a hiker, skier and lover of the West's natural beauty. Much of his later life was spent in Sun Valley, ID enjoying these pursuits.

Gordon is survived by his sons, Eric (Heidi Campbell) and Scott (Dawn St. Clair); brother Lee (Pam) Younger; sister Gayle Johnson (Ken); and four grandchildren Kai, Zachary, Grace and Ella.

Eric and Scott,

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of your dad. Gordon was very inspirational in my life from age 19. He took a chance on me when starting my career and throughout the 18 years I spent at Seattle Packaging. Even now as I think about retirement I never forget how he challenged me to improve myself. I remember when he called me to share his excitement of the 2008 election. Gordon exhibited a type of compassion for his employees rarely seen by a business leader. I learned a lot from him professionally and socially. He always treated me like family, something I will always remember. He will be greatly missed.

Dear Scott and Eric: I just learned with a deep sadness about Gordon's passage back in October 2017. All my sincere condolences to you and your families. Your father made the world a better place and he will always be remembered by those who got to know him. I'm lucky to have been one who knew him, even if for a short time. I am deeply touched with sorrow and very sorry for your loss. Maryam Borghey (Minbashian)

Dear Eric and Scott and families,

I am truly shocked and saddened by the news of Gordon's death. I am so truly sorry for your loss - and for all of our loss in his passing.

I met Gordon in the late 1970s - purely by chance. We became friends and I totally admired his integrity, his spirit, his intellect and his interest in the world around him and all living things. His political views, his concern for our environment, for making his business successful and the world a better place for all of us.

I have been thinking of him lately and decided to Google his name - and learned of his passing.

Gordon - and you Eric and Scott - have my love and blessings. Gordon, Eric and Scott - although a short encounter long ago - you sincerely blessed my life.

Much love to you now and always,

Eileen Brickley Todd

Gordon was instrumental in my career. I worked at Boise Cascade for 18 years before coming to Seattle Pkg. in 1994. I transferred to Spokane Pkg in 1996. I had a GREAT journey with the company before retiring in January of this year. I have awesome memories of him.....he was an awesome boss. I have stories to tell....all good. I promised him on the 1st day I would be there for EVERYHING and I was....respected that man dearly and all he did for all his employees...they broke the mold with him...rest in peace

I want to thank Gordon for his role in my career. I was a young, inexperienced kid working in sales service for Kaplan Paper and making trouble for the systems developers, but he and others at Seattle Packaging saw me in a leadership role in IT. Thank you, Gordon.
