Marion Rappe Obituary

RAPPE, Marion L. - In San Francisco on November 17, 2005. Dearly beloved husband of Susan Wheeler Rappe; loving father of Claudia and John Wheeler-Rappe of San Francisco, Sara Rappe of Ann Arbor, MI, Audrey Rappe of Ypsilanti, MI and Gene Rappe of Portland, OR; grandfather of Helen, Stephen, David Rappe and Isabel Rappe. Also survived by his sister Colleen Lance and her children Jeff and Shannon. Marion was born in Silverton, Oregon to Letha and Morris Rappe on September 9, 1928. He spent two years in the Navy, then got his undergraduate degree at the University of Oregon. He spent a year and a half studying in Bonn, Germany; received his Masters degree from the University of Indiana and his PhD from the University of California at Berkeley. He taught at the University of California, Riverside and spent a year in Vienna, Austria on a Fulbright Scholarship. After returning to Riverside for a year, he took a job as professor of German history at San Francisco State University where he taught for the next 30 years. He was a superb teacher, challenging his students to look for the 'big picture' and stressing the importance of critical thinking. He had a wonderful sense of irony, loved music of all kinds, was a voracious reader and was fascinated by the classical world. He spoke fluent German as well as some Polish, Norwegian, Swedish, Italian and Turkish. There will be a Celebration of his Life on the 18th of December in San Francisco. Marion and I and our respective wives were fellow graduate students at Indiana University during the late 1950s. He was a model student and a delightful friend. Thinking back on our times together brings a sense of joy and gratitude for having known him.

Professor Rappe was an inspiration to us all. It was a privilege and a pleasure to study under him.

He taught Western Civilization II and The Rise and Fall of Nazi Germany, a terribly important course which he always dreaded teaching. The title alone explains his sentiment.

I am sorry I didn't know him better but am thankful for the opportunity to have studied under him during my undergraduate years [1985-1989].

Dr Rappe was my teacher in the 1970's at San Francisco State. I took several courses from him. His clarity and his principled positions influenced me greatly. He encouraged creativity and fostered unusual interpretations of history .

He was a superb teacher of whom I was very fond and who changed my understanding of life.

I've many times wondered how he was since we fell out of communication in the early 1980's.

Dr Rappe was an excellent mentor to his students and a sincere, witty, and humble man. His death is a loss to us all.

Of course I will remember him always as I have remembered him for the past almost 30 years - with great afffection and gratitude.

I wish the best to his family and send my heartfelt condolences.

Deepest condolences. I was a student of Dr. Rappe's at SFSU in 1985 in his 19th Century Europe course. He was witty and wise, and it was a honor to study under him. Regards, Matt Carton
