Frank Gotch Obituary

Dr. Frank A. Gotch

August 27, 1926 - February 18, 2017

It is with deep sadness to report that Dr. Frank A. Gotch, pioneering nephrologist and founder of "kinetic modeling" has died.
Dr. Frank A. Gotch, was born August 27, 1926 in Humboldt, Iowa, is an American physician known for his work in renal dialysis adequacy, specifically the development of Kt/V and standardized Kt/V. He is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco.
Dr. Gotch was a consultant to the Renal Research Institute in New York and Associate Professor of Medicine at UCSF. Dr. Gotch has worked in clinical dialysis and dialysis research, particularly quantification of therapy, for over 30 years. He chaired the NIH Hemodialyzer evaluation Study Group which sets standards for dialyzer performance in 1972 and the National NIH conference on Adequacy of Hemodialysis in 1975. He served on the planning committee and as kinetic consultant to the National Cooperative Dialysis Study and serves on the Steering Committee of the current HEMO study and was Co-Principal Investigator of a Cooperative study of Randomized Peritoneal Dialysis Prescriptions and Clinical Outcome. He has over 100 publications and provided consultation in dialysis kinetics and dialysis systems development to industry.
Dr. Gotch can be considered as the "father of modern dialysis kinetic modeling" and responsible for the development of the Fresenius On-Line Clearance Monitor and Access Flow.
He is survived by his wife, Sarah, son Jeremy, granddaughters Rachel & Zoe, Nephew and Niece Marty and Jane.

I have just learned the sad news of Frank's death. I served a fellowship under him almost 50 years ago. That opportunity was perhaps the most fortunate thing that has happened to me in my life. I am deeply indebted for his friendship, leadership, and all he taught me. My sincere condolences to his family and to all who knew and loved him.

I worked with Dr. Gotch as a young RN graduate in the 60s. I have never forgotten him. Just days before I read this obituary, I thought of him and reflected on the early days of dialysis at San Francisco General Hospital. He was an outstanding teacher; he modeled true professionalism along with his personal regard for his patients and staff. Many values that I learned from him are still with me today. It was an honor to have known and worked with Dr. Frank Gotch.

Dear Jeremy & the Gotch Family,

My mom, Pat, was your dad's patient until he retired. In the 1980's, he diagnosed her with glomerulonephritis with an 80% chance of complete renal failure within 5 years. Mostly because of him, she is still alive and doing ok today.

She often talks about how great he was, first because he cared, and also because he took a "whole-body" view towards her health (even examining her eyes during appts). He always cautioned her about what to do and not do, eat and not eat -- specific, impactful advice (like: no ibuprofen; don't ever run out of energy or food; eat protein, but not too much; always collect urine samples over 24 hours) that doctors today do not even know, if they even bother to discuss with their patients.

Not having known any other doctors, my mom assumed all doctors were like your dad, and found, to her great surprise after his retirement, that *none* were as careful or holistic or detailed-oriented as he was.

We miss your dad greatly, and hope he was able to pass his legacy on somehow. We hope you and the family are also doing well at this sad time.

With condolences and best regards,

William

Frank Gotch--one of the most pleasant, bright persons I have ever met. He was always cheerful, thoughtful. He could disagree with someone or something without being irritating or inducing rancor. I have not seen him for several years but feel a loss with his leaving us.

Apart from his highly original mind which revolutionised understanding of the dialysis procedure over many years he contributed to many related areas of science. He was very modest about his many accomplishments. He had a sharp wit and anywhere Frank was for any length of time you would hear laughter. He was an excellent teacher, demanding but beloved by his pupils, and fellow physicians. He will be sorely missed personally but also because there just was no one with the same combination of originality, practicality and ability to apply discoveries to the care of patients.
He was a true friend and lots of fun.
