WILLIAM COWLING Obituary

COWLING II, WILLIAM S. October 10,1929 to November 27, 2010
William S. Cowling II was born October 10, 1929 in San Diego, CA and was the only child of William S. Cowling Sr. and Mary Louise Cowling. He passed away peacefully the morning of November 27th, from complications resulting from a twelve-year battle with Parkinson's. He was a beloved husband, father, grand-father, patriarch and friend. Bill attended San Diego High School and graduated from San Diego State University in 1951 with a Bachelors Degree in Psychology. In addition, he served in the military during the Korean War. Through high school, college and his service career, he spent 11 years competing as a top ranked wrestler. During the Korean War, he held the Pacific Fleet Championship for two consecutive years and received the Navy "N" from the Secretary of the Navy. One of the highlights of his life, was when he won two Gold medals in the Los Angeles Senior Olympics in the mid 1970's. He also loved playing tennis and enjoyed snow skiing. Dixie Lumber was founded in 1913 and was later purchased by his father and partners. It later merged with Airline Lumber to become what it is known today as Dixieline Lumber Company. Bill had been with Dixieline since 1954 and succeeded his father as President and CEO in 1970. Under his leadership, Dixieline had grown to become the 38th largest distributor of building materials in the United States. The Cowling family sold Dixieline Lumber to Weyerhaeuser in 1979. Fifteen years later, in 1994, the family regained control of the company. In 2003, the 90-year old lumberyard chain was sold to Lanoga Corporation. By then, it had grown to a company with 10 locations serving most of Southern California including a truss and component plant, a lumber distribution facility and a lumber shipping facility on the Columbia River in Oregon. He stayed on as a consultant for 5 years, in which the company later became part of ProBuild. Bill had a long and noteworthy career at Dixieline and retired at the age of 80. An unforgettable character, describes many individuals first impression of Bill. He was charming, funny, mischievous, astute, visionary, caring, loving, loyal but within the essence of his attributes was his true self. This was most apparent when he discussed his family, revealing powerful emotions of love and commitment. His friends, business peers, employees, suppliers, customers, competitors and acquaintances, from the highest levels to everyday folks, identified closely with him. He was known to most people as simply "Cowling." Bill was also a man of many talents. He graduated from the San Diego Regional Police Academy at the age of 50 and worked for 6 years as a reserve officer for the San Diego Police Department. He then transferred in 1985 to the San Diego Sheriff's Department, where he retired as an Honorary Captain. The Cowling family contributed a new fixed-wing airplane to the SDPD, bomb trailer and SWAT van to the SD Sheriff's Department. In addition, he helped raise money for a Sheriff's helicopter. Bill was instrumental in the development and construction of "Duffy Town" for simulated, urban law en-forcement training exercises at the Miramar Tactical Training Facility. Professional activities include serving as past President of San Diego Lumber Association, Area Director and past President of Southern California Lumber Association and past Director of San Diego County Building Contractors Association. Civic activities include serving as past President of the Honorary Deputy Sheriffs Association, 20/30 Club, San Diego Epilepsy Society, Propeller Club of the US Port of San Diego and the San Diego Crime Commission. He has served as past Director of the San Diego Boys Club, John Davis YMCA, Director of the 1984 U.S. Summer Olympic Wrestling Team, Young Presidents Organization International and the International Affairs Committee for the City of San Diego. Bill was also a genorous contributor to the Parkinson's Association of San Diego, San Diego State Athletic Program, he sponsored over 50 various community athletic programs and donated the Cowling Movement Disorders Clinic in the Division of Neurology at Scripps Clinic in La Jolla. Bill is survived by Ovie, his loving wife of 47 years and will be deeply missed by his children Debbie of Scottsdale, AZ, Bill III (Liz), Scott, Craig (Kristina), Lance (Shelby), Derek (Kat), Christy (John - Fiance) and 12 beautiful grandchildren. The celebration of Bill's life and Memorial Service will be on Monday, December 13th, at 11:30 a.m. at St. Therese of Carmel Parish, 4355 Del Mar Trails Road, San Diego, CA 92130. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorial contributions to the Parkinson's Association of San Diego, 8555 Aero Drive #308, San Diego, CA 92123-1745.

Bill Cowling was one of the most generous contributors to many causes. I had the honor to work with Bill on many projects with the Athletic Department at SDSU. He was the first Chair of the Golden Aztec Ring which was the fund raiser to sell out the Press Level at the then Jack Murphy Stadium. We sold 42 blocks at $50,000 each in our first year. We then approached the AGC, Associated General Contractors to provide the free labor for a two and one half million Football Athletic Center. He was the MC and Roaster of Kit Sickles held at the U. S. Grant Hotel for the San Diego Apartment Association. He and his lovely wife, Ovie, let the M. S. Brunch Society's (Single Group) use his home in Mt. Helix for a fund raiser. He will be missed by many and I am blessed to have known him.

My deepest condolences go out to the Cowling family. I only met Mr. Cowling once but he was such a nice man he really left a great and lasting impression on me. I am good friends with one of his children and after meeting Mr. Cowling just that once and now being able to read about the wonderful contributions he made to society in his years, it is clear that he has passed his kind hearted traits down to his family. I am sure his legacy will be carried on through his children and Grandchildren and many generations of Cowlings to come.
Rest in peace Mr. Cowling

To the Cowling family: Bill Cowling was truly one of a kind. A gentleman, a counselor and a man who believed in community. The motto of San Diego County is "The noblest Motive Is The Public Good". Mr. Cowling lived that every day and San Diego is a much better, and safer place because of him.

Dear Family of Bill Cowling,

As a 28 year employee of the SDSO I want to express my gratitude for the depth and breadth of support for the Sheriff's Office that Mr. Cowling and his family displayed. A life fulfilled and shared by many because of his selflessness and generosity.

We will not see the likes of him again.

God bless and keep you,

I am so sorry to hear of Bill's death and that his last decade was badly marred by chronic illness. That makes it a double sadness. My contacts with Bill and Ovie were few in the early nineties and all around social tennis. Yet, those brief contacts left positive and long-lasting impressions. Shortly after my contacts he and his son captured and disarmed a crook who snuck into their car at a La Jolla gas station. The man leaves a legend. The time was brief but the memories long. Thanks and take my support Ovie.

To the Cowling Family: Sorry about your loss. Wanted you to know that not only did you give the SDPD a fixed wing airplane, your gift also set the stage for the founding of the SDPD Air Support Unit. I was lucky enough to be the guy who went to Bill's office that day to get the check for the Cessna. A surveillance conducted from the plane led to the arrest of a narcotics figure who had two helicopters, a twin engine plane, and a Mt. Helix home, all of which were forfeited to us as ill gotten gains of his narcotics traffic. Those helo's were the first two the PD used for patrol. The plane and house were sold and the proceeds used to fund the Air Support Unit ABLE. The legacy continues today.
