BUCHANAN - Jessie Marie Scroggins, 97, of Niles, MI, passed away peacefully from natural causes on Monday, January 25, 2016, at Riveridge Manor in Niles, MI.

She was born Jessie Marie Bryant on June 1, 1918, in Conway County, Arkansas, and married Melvin Scroggins on October 13, 1932. In 1947 they moved to Buchanan, MI, where Jessie was employed by Electro-Voice.

Jessie was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a member of the First Church of Christ in Niles, MI, and enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening, quilting, canning and baking. She always had ice cream, cookies and cake for her grandchildren. She was best-known for her quick wit, sense of humor and her love of people.

Jessie was preceded in death by her husband of 78 years, Melvin; her son, Jerry, and daughter-in-law, Jacquelyn Scroggins; her son-in-law, Harold Gaul; her granddaughter, Brenda Scroggins; her sister, Charsie; and her brother, HC.

Surviving family members include sons, Robert (Mary) Scroggins, Don (Retha) Scroggins; and daughter, Phyllis Gaul, all of Buchanan; along with 10 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 10:00 am - 11:00 am on Thursday, January 28, at Starks Family Funeral Home, Swem Chapel, 301 W. Front Street, Buchanan, MI, with the funeral service, officiated by Rev. David Thompson, following. Burial will be at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Buchanan.
