Reed Stone Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 14, 2009.
Reed Lewis Stone Reed Stone was born in Martinsville, Virginia, on February 26, 1934, and died peacefully in Austin, Texas, on December 12, 2009. Reed was the oldest of four sons born to John Harold and Elma Stone. Reed spent his early years at home in Bassett, Virginia, where he started working at the age of eight in his father's grocery store, standing on a drink crate selling soft drinks and ice cream cones. At the age of thirteen he became a student at Fork Union Military Academy and graduated in 1950. The following year he attended Virginia Military Institute and then entered the United States Military Academy at West Point. He graduated in 1955 with a commission in the U.S. Air Force. His first assignment was pilot training at Moore Air Base in Mission, Texas, followed by completion of pilot training at Laredo Air Force Base. It was in Laredo that Reed met a U.T. student named Roberta Love who was home for the summer. They would marry on September 6, 1958. Reed and Roberta's military assignments include graduate school at the University of Michigan ('59-'61), Space and Missile Systems Div., Los Angeles, CA ('61-'65) and ('70-'76), instructor USMA ('65-'68), RVN ('68-'69), and Professor Air Science, Purdue University ('78-'81). Reed retired from the Air Force in 1981 and relocated to Austin where he lived until his death. His military decorations include the Silver Star, the Distinguished Flying Cross, and the Meritorious Service Medal. Reed is survived by his wife of fifty-one years, Roberta. Daughter Tracy and husband Reinold Cornelius and their son Derek and daughter Eva, all of Austin. Son Lewis and fiancée Tracy Hill of Austin. Younger son Reed, wife Luz, and daughters Sierra and Sophia of Round Rock. Reed's three brothers, John Harold Jr., Oliver, and Russell live in Virginia. Reed was a long time member of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, where he served as an usher. His activities and interests in Austin included membership in Northwest Austin Rotary Club for 25 years, ACES, the Kaypro Club, owner/manager of Pond Springs Econo Storage, and golf. His family and friends will miss him. Cause of death was pancreatic cancer first discovered on April 11, 2008. We thank the friendly doctors, nurses, and staff, at Texas Oncology, for helping Reed achieve a year and a half of quality life following diagnosis. We also thank the staff at Seton Northwest for their kindness and care. The family will receive friends Monday December 14, 2009, from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m., at Weed- Corley-Fish Funeral Home North Lamar. Funeral Services are 2:00 p.m., Tuesday December 15, 2009, at Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd. Interment will follow at Austin Memorial Park. If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd. Obituary and guestbook online at http://wcfish.com

Roberta, I was so sorry to learn of Reed's death. I will be thinking of you and the family throughout this Holiday Season. I pray that you will be able to Celebrate the Season knowing that you had many years together and that Reed is now at peace.

I am so sorry to hear that Reed has passed away. I leased office space from Reed years ago and many times I think of how 'perfect' that time in my life was. Reed, always kind and gentle, with a smile, was 'fun to have around.' He often told me I was the perfect tenant! When my daughter passed away 2/08, Reed attended her Texas memorial. I couldn't believe his act of kindness. Not that we were strangers but people move on and times change. I regret that I was unable to visit with him that day. I've thought of him numerous times since last seeing him. May God richly wrap the family in love and fond memories. I know it must be very difficult. Reed had a heart for people. I have fond memories of your beloved Reed.

Roberta:

I am a relatively new member in the NW Austin Rotary Club so I did not know Reed as well as most of the members. But I will never forget the meeting last year where he served as our speaker. He unselfishly told his story of being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, he precisely described the symptoms, he told us about the treatments available, and finally he recited the statistics for life expectancy. That was a courageous act which was intended to educate each of us as to what is known about this dreaded disease. I was moved that he cared so much for each member of our Club that he would tell his story so that one or more of us would have a better chance of surviving if we contracted the same disease. Finally in my contact with Reed, it was always evident that he conducted himself with a caring grace for everyone he came into contact with both before his illness and certainly after.

I pray that God's blessing will comfort you and your family in this time of mourning.

We have leased our office from Reed for just over 7 years. It was a great pleasure that we had the opportunity to visit with Reed a few weeks back when he visited the property.

Every Christmas he brought us oranges and grapefruits, always with a big smile and warm wishes.

Reed was a wonderful man and will be greatly missed. I will especially miss the times when he would just pop in and we could talk for a while.

May God give strength and comfort to his family at this difficult time.

I grew up in Bassett and the entire Stone family were dear friends. My dad and Reed's mom, Elma attended grade school together. Reed was a room mate with my brother, Bill along with Hanson and Lloyd at VMI. Reed was my military idol and that is why I joined the Air Force in 1958, only four days before Reed and Roberta were married. I never got a chance to see Reed over the years but he will always remain in my heart and thoughts. My condolences to his loving family. Eddie McDonald
