Herbert Bates Hasenbalg

Herbert Bates Hasenbalg, St. Augustine, Florida, passed away at home on Tuesday, May 30, 2017. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Mildred Hasenbalg of Gauley Bridge, West Virginia.

Herb grew up in Gauley Bridge, W.Va. He funded his college degree in printing management at West Virginia Institute of Technology by working summers in the coal mines.

In 1968, he married his only love in life, Beverley, and he accepted what became a 33 year-career with DuPont in Philadelphia, Delaware and Indiana. He never liked to wear shoes, but it was a Dupont requirement.

He loved to hunt and fish, and he was a skilled cabinet maker. He also enjoyed beekeeping and golf, when time allowed. He was active in the Episcopal Church. He designed and built several pieces of furniture for two Episcopal churches: St. Christopher's in Carmel, Indiana, and St. Pauls's in Federal Point, Fla. His favorite quote was by St. Francis: "preach always and, if necessary, use words."

Herb is survived by his wife, Beverley; a son, Kurt (Julie); granddaughter, Evie ; son, Matt (Kellie); grandchildren, Jordan, Joshua, and Hollee; two sisters, Gen MacKenzie (Maine) and Nancy Kincaid (W.Va.).

A memorial service will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, June 9, at St. Johns Family Funeral Home. A celebration of Herb's life will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 10, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Federal Point, followed by a reception in the parish hall.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 124 Commercial Ave., East Palatka, FL 32121, or St. Christopher's Episcopal Chuch, 1402 West Main St., Carmel, IN 46032, or Community Hospice and Palliative Care, 4266 Sunbeam Road, Jacksonville, FL 32257.
