Daniel Kevin DeTullio Sr., 54, of Millville passed away suddenly Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011.
Dan was a lifelong resident of Millville and graduated from Millville High School in 1975. He attended Cumberland County College. Dan worked at R-Way tooling until 1980, when he began working for the New Jersey State Correctional Department, where he retired as a lieutenant in 2005.
Dan was instrumental in planning and building the Thunderbolt Club, where he could be found cooking for many banquets honoring Millville sports teams. Most recently, he cooked Thanksgiving Day breakfast for the football team. Dan also was a member of the South Jersey Scramblers Enduro Club. Dan was inducted to the Thunderbolt Hall of Fame in 1980, and South Jersey Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1996.
As a Millville High senior, he maintained a perfect record of 34 and 0 in the heavyweight division. His wins included the Edgewood Christmas tournament, District 32 and Region 8 tournaments and ended his career by winning the State Championship with a pin. Dan also played football for three years.
Dan remained an avid football and wrestling fan, who bled orange and blue. After retirement, Dan enjoyed the simple pleasures of life: bird hunting with his dogs, Casey and Lacey, playing poker and bass fishing. Dan was famous for his quick wit and great joke telling. He was a larger than life character who lived life to its fullest. Dan has joined his friend, "Big Frank" on God's great bass fishing lake and will be greatly missed by all.
He is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Cynthia Ann (Rafine) DeTullio; son, Daniel Kevin DeTullio Jr.; daughter, Andrea Nicole DeTullio; his mother, Vivian DeTullio; brothers and their wives, Albert "Ricky" and Donna, and David and Melody; sisters and their husbands, Diane and Bob Williams, and Karen and Bob Legg. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews, cousins and in-laws. Dan was predeceased by his father, Albert R. DeTullio Sr.
A funeral home visitation will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. today and again from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday with services beginning at 1:30 p.m. at Rone Funeral Service, 1110 E. Chestnut Ave., Vineland. Interment will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Vineland.
Arrangements are under the supervision of Rone Funeral Service.
If so desired, donations may be made to the Daniel Kevin DeTullio Sr. Scholarship fund c/o The Thunderbolt Club, 706 N. 8th St., Millville, NJ 08332; or the Alzheimer's Association -- South Jersey Chapter, 3 Eves Dr. Suite 310, Marlton, NJ 08053.

I met Officer DeTullia soon after the opening of Southern State Correctional Facility SSCF. As the administrator of SSCF I was concerned about the lack of appropriate labor for the inmates stay at the facility. I had worked at a facility for individuals with developmental disabilities and witnessed a popular hobby for the residents. It involved making ornaments etc out of concrete. I thought that this could be a good labor project for the inmates and we could sell the products. The problem was that no one thought the project was viable, so I thought who can I choose to get this program off the ground. You guessed it. Officer DeTullia was the perfect choice. As he always did, he enthusiastically took on the project and because of his great reputation, he was able to get help from many departments. Before long, SSCF was known throughout the state as that place where they make all those great concrete products. Office DeTullia, you were a special man. Youre greatly missed.

Cindy ~ please accept our sincere sympathies. We are saddened by the sudden loss of Danny. Lew and I find comfort that we shared a drink and made a toast to the "good old days in the pokey" when we saw you guys at the Ramada. Danny was a true friend to both of us....his smile, his kind heart and his quick wit will never be forgotten. We are in Florida and are unable to make it to Dan's services but know you and your children are in our thoughts. Love, Dawn and Lew Walker ~ Naples, Florida
